Terps Fans on the B1G move (link)

Quote:I would say the vast majority accepts the move. We understand the financial position we were in, we understand sports were cut and were were in trouble long term. We get all of that., but while a vast majority accepts the move, we aren't excited.

Saw that earlier today and thought it was rather interesting. What I would be interested in finding out would be if it was more open and not done over a weekend (i.e., without the whole nondisclosure thing). Would the Terps still be moving? I think that they would still move due to the financial aspect of it, since it is the administration making the final decision. I don't know about the fans though. I don't know if that would swing the majority one way or the other.

Gotta love the commenter who compared Maryland to a fat man on a diet. Going to the Big Ten is like eating a salad (the right thing to do when you're overweight) when you'd rather have a chilli cheeseburger (i.e. remain in the ACC). Sometimes you do what's necessary, but you don't like it.

Here's an article that talks about some of the blow back against Maryland leaving the ACC. Made me think wouldn't it be funny if Maryland at the 11th hour didn't leave the ACC.

Fine with me... as long as Loh leaves, the Terps can stay. 04-cheers

Louisville's already on its way in. So I say keep Maryland and "allow" ND to be #16 in football.

This is why I really can't get mad at UMD. The people that caused the problem are gone, and most UMD fans hate them more than I do. I do think that UMD's administration is kind of sleazy, but I don't know any UMD fans who are particularily enthused with either their admin, or their admin's handling of the situation. I feel like there is just a ton of collateral damage. I think that the average UMD fan got screwed and the average ACC fan got screwed by having a charter member abruptly leave. In a way, we(UMD fans and ACC fans) are both in the same boat, even though our respective institutions are going two different ways.

So UMD will be exchanging 60-years worth of basketball and football with UNC, Duke, NCSU and Virginia (all within a five-hour drive of College Park) for the likes of Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, et al. Hope for their sake the extra money is worth it.

Anybody know why Maryland lost its way financially? Seems like with Under Armour, heavily populated area, high on the academic end, that it wouldn't have a problem making money and keeping sports. If its one of the obvious that the President and AD department are/were bad with money, then I'd hope they are replaced before moving on to the Big 10.

Simple answer. Washington's sports priorities are 1. Redskins; 2. Redskins; 3. Redskins; 4. Redskins; 5. Redskins; 6. Capitals; 7. Nats; 8. VA TECH; 9. Wizards; 10. Maryland Lacrosse; 11. Maryland Basketball; 12. Maryland football

I don't think that quiet answers the question. They've had Under Armour guy for awhile, they've had ACC money coming in, they managed to build a new bball stadium assuming with suites, etc. From what I've seen bball is usually a sell out, they had some good years in football which led to good attendance.....I just think they mismanaged their money for way too long.

I don't know for sure, but here's my guess.

They built too much and expanded too fast. The early '00's were good to UMD. Their football program looked like it was going to be legit for a couple of years and their basketball team won the '02 NC. I think they bet that things would keep on improving and added teams and improved their facilities. Basketball dropped off and football took a beating. Teams in metro areas have fickle fan bases (see Miami when they lose compared to when they win). That caused a lot of the money to dry up, but the expenses remained.

Also academics and athletic funding do not necessarily go hand in hand (see WVU).

To be fair they are trading their tradition for the likes of Penn St, Rutgers, Ohio St, and Michigan.

The previous AD (now AD at NC State if I'm not mistaken) spent them into the poorhouse. The new President and AD had to find a way out of that financially. The Big Ten money offered such a way easily.

You and nzmorange got it. Debbie Yow is the former Maryland AD who is now at NC State. Lots of Maryland fans blame her for the financial situation. She certainly should get some of it but there is plenty to go around. Both the old and new get some of it. Yow basically expanded the football stadium when we were doing well but that has passed now. Throw in a fickle fan base where the Redskins are the main draw. Can't fill the stadium and you got the bills to pay. Then you throw in the fact they had to pay Ralph Friedgen $2 Million to get rid of him and hire FREAKING RANDY EDSALL...which I think he's making $2 Million (don't remember this for sure.) And that is just football. So...all this to say that the Terps have money issues.
