Wink Wake Forest expansion
I've probably ruffled some feathers for pointing out that WFU is the smallest school in the BCS (not just the ACC - the entire BCS). Now, I'd like to say something good about Wake.

Yesterday I was doing a little sight-seeing with my family in Charlotte, NC when I noticed the Wake Forest University Charlotte Campus - School of Business. First of all, it's VERY nice-looking from the outside (and I'm sure it's 1st class on the inside also).

My question is 2-fold:
1) Has WFU noticed any increase in support for the athletic team in the Charlotte area?
2) Are there any plans to play a neutral site game in Bank of America Stadium (which, by the way, is about 1 mile from the Charlotte Campus).

If anyone - Deac fan or otherwise - knows anything about these developments, please share!

It's not their entire "school of business," it's their MBA program, which is like 125 students. If you're an undergrad majoring in business you still matriculate in Winston-Salem. The best part about it is that you can park in their garage for free when you go to Fitzgerald's.... and no, there has been no sudden rise in support for Wake based on their MBA program moving to CLT.

Is it nice? I got an email from Wake's MBA program last week.
(I'm considering getting a Masters in Business Administration.)

Here's satellite view map (very close to NFL stadium and NBA arena; also it's approximately 1/2 a block from the bus station and the commuter train runs right behind the building. Before getting married I lived in downtown Charlotte and I really enjoyed it.

A smart move by Wake. Banking is big in Charlotte. Lots of potential candidates.

I can't see many MBA candidates making the ~90 minute drive from Charlotte to Winston-Salem for a game just because they are now at the WF MBA school. The might if Wake were playing their Alma-matter.

While looking around I did see Uconn has a building in Charlotte!

(Yes, I know it is not really Uconn.)

Wake Forest alumni support their school very well.
The average Deacon Club contribution is about $1,500, which is much higher than the average contributions at some other ACC institutions.
The Wake community may be small, but they are very supportive.

Not really UConn is an understatement! Here's what the Wikipedia page has to say about C.S.B.:

"CSB ceased operation at all its campuses without prior warning and announced a bankruptcy filing on Wednesday March 4, 2009. The school reopened approximately 2 weeks after the closure, and was repurchased by its founder - Dick Robinson Media Inc. who resumed operations on May 19, 2009."

"Originally founded in 1964 by Dick Robinson as a small, private school in Connecticut, offering only minor classes in radio performance"

TRUE. I guess the point of this thread is to ask if there would ever be a Wake "home" game played in Charlotte?

If Wake Forest didn't move their home game with Notre Dame to Charlotte (when they could have sold out the stadium), I doubt they will ever will. It's too far to transport the students.

I honestly couldn't tell you. It's a very nice location, but I've never been inside the building, let alone a classroom. You can find out more about their program here. Personally, if I were going back to get another graduate degree, I'd go to a program on a school's main campus just so I had access to the full resources of the university. If you're in finance though, the advantages of being in the country's second leading financial center (behind only NYC) may outweigh that for you.

Plus, as I said, it's right next to Fitzgerald's, which is one of the few places in CLT that a New Yorker can get Chicken Riggies. 03-wink

I actually just read a really interesting article about why many schools are creating a presence in Uptown Charlotte. Worth a read here. Northeastern just moved in, for one.

Yeah, that's just it. You're talking about a grand total of about 124 grad students, the overwhelming majority of which I would wager went elsewhere for undergrad. As such, I would guess most of the students in that building don't even root for Wake, let alone people in the surrounding community that have zero connection to the school. So to answer his original question: no, I don't really see this as a prelude to Wake having more games in Charlotte. I think they could, simply because it's still a city in their state, so they do have a fanbase in CLT, but it wouldn't have anything to do with moving their MBA program there.

PART ONE
Thanks! I appreciate it.

PART TWO - and slightly OT
"...the overwhelming majority of which I would wager went elsewhere for undergrad."
IMO, this is one of the huge academic advantages of conferences that everyone overlooks. Throughout the four years of my undergrad, I was exposed to thoroughly exposed to every school in the BIG EAST. To this day, I know significant amounts of information about schools of which I otherwise would not have heard.* That wasn't a deciding factor when I selected/will select where to go to grad school, but it did mean that I gave some schools a second look when I would not have otherwise. A.s.s.u.m.i.n.g** that I am not a HUGE outlier, one of the biggest advantages of being in the ACC is that many of the best and the brightest undergrads in America will become familiar with your school. IMO, that is marketing GOLD for a graduate admissions officer. IVY schools aside, the ACC has the best graduate academics, so I would imagine that ACC graduate schools benefit from this more than the schools in any other conference. In fact, I would wager that over the next four years, as ACC undergrads are exposed to the new additions, Syracuse, Pitt, and ND will see a substantial improvement in their graduate school rankings, especially those colleges that are good, but not elite.

*Not that I'm ancient or anything, but still....
**Apparently there is a censor and it won't let me say that word without spacing the letters. When I type a.s.s.u.m.i.n.g, this happens: assuming.

They rent space in a building in Uptown Charlotte... it's hardly a big deal -- Hell, Northeastern University, has a "campus" a couple blocks away with just as much space in another building. Plenty of schools have office and classroom spaces in cities other than their man campus locations, it's usually to be near certain businesses - like Charlotte's banking community.
