I'm a little bit lost on how the author considers the current CAA better than CUSA for ODU. He states regional rivalries with JMU and Delaware as reasons it hurt us. Myself, or any other ODU fan, has not considered JMU or UDEL a basketball rival in the past 10 years. Our two main rivals (VCU, GMU) left. This is a load of garbage.

He says Houston will be helped "should they enjoy any success".

Winning helps. what an insight.

they also repeatedly say that Charlotte and ODU will play UTSA alot.

You guys will play each Texas school 1x per year so you'll play in Texas at most twice per season.

That isn't as bad as they make it out to be.

I'm also pretty sure that Charlotte and ODU's best teams in history were during the 1982-1991 seasons when UAB, Charlotte, ODU, WKU et al were all in the same conference. The additions of UTEP and MTSU et al will only improve on what we had back then.

Mike Decourcy is usually better than that. That was very Bleacherreport-ish. Maybe, just maybe you could make an argument that the old CAA in it's prime was a better situation but I won't.

His argument is that ODU will no longer play the CAA teams? Maybe he should do his homework. ODU is playing VCU, Richmond, JMU, William and Mary, UNCW and George Mason this season. That's what we know, could be more.

If anything it helps them in creating a OOC schedule. Most of the old CAA still enjoys playing ODU.

How many recruits did Charlotte get from the northeast while playing in the A10 and how many times did a recruit come to Charlotte just because we played in a northeast conference? Is Charlotte better today for having been in the A10 (no)? Did I like the A10 (yes). Did I think it would help us get recruits from DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, & Boston (yes)? Did it work? (No). Bring on Marshall, ODU, WKU, UAB & MTU.

Dude is focusing on basketball. Yes, CUSA is a step down from the A10 in bball. However, the A10 isn't the same A10 as it was last year either. If you look at the total athletic picture, CUSA is a step up for Charlotte, especially when it comes to football and baseball. Besides, we weren't really world beaters in the A10 anyway. Time to move on.

RE: Sporting News - Basketball: Five hurt, five helped in conference moves
I disagree with the move hurting ODU. The CAA is a shadow of its former self and the exposure ODU will get will far outweigh the "regional" rivalries lost. The Florida and Texas exposure will help ODU recruiting and overall success. Not to mention the better quality teams in CUSA vs. the new CAA. WKU, MTSU, UTEP, UNCC UAB vs....

He's operating in a vacuum and apparently assuming the leagues we left have not changed.

He's also not criticizing the moves themselves, more like painting which basketball programs are supposed victims of realignment.

I hear that a lot. All I know is the Herd dominates A-10 competition with a 42-21 all-time record against teams in that league.

The Herd sure as Hell doesn't dominate C-USA.

When all is settled, C-USA is gonna be a great bball conference. A multiple-bid league every year.

UTEP, USM, ODU, Charlotte, UAB, WKU, La Tech, Marshall, MTSU...

...on any given year, at LEAST 4 out of those 9 can go dancing....and that's understating it. Our b-ball league is gonna be solid.

The old A10, before the recent defections, was better than CUSA except Memphis. Doesn't mater now though, it's up to all of us to make CUSA a better league. For better or for worse, football is driving Charlotte's ship now.

My main issue with the "article" is the writer's assertion that ODU Football will not compete with Alabama. What a Maroon! What a buffoon! Burned my macaroons! 01-wingedeagle03-hissyfit03-rotfl LOL

Well, if competing with Alabama is the new critieria, then the whole CUSA, AAC, ACC, BIG, and every other conference not called the SEC should all just disband football right now. What an asinine comment.

Charlotte's 1977 team went to the Final Four and sent two guys to the NBA. That was easily our best team. 1998 and 2001 were probably our next best seasons. The period you speak of had some success, but not as much as CUSA.

This is off topic, but Georgia State just put out a video history of the Sun Belt that talks a lot about that team. It was pretty cool.
