Question for WKU fans...

My buddy used to pitch for the EKU baseball team. Do y'all even consider them rivals?

(I ask because ECU doesn't consider Western Carolina a rival.)

No. Not anymore. When we were in the OVC with them until about 1981-2, we were of course. We also played football only in the OVC again for one season around the late 1990's before joining the Gateway/MVC for football....I think that's when it was. Except for our older fans who remember those olden days, the rest of us see them as that smaller school in Richmond, 20 miles from Lexington.

While in the same conference, we completely dominated (decimated may be a better word) in basketball. Football when both were 1AA was an incredible rivalry at that time. WKU played for the National title in 71 and 73 and EKU played for it twice in the early 80's. Both schools had very successful football programs around the same time and played in the same conference.

As to other sports, doubtful anyone pays any attention to it now.

RE: WKU fans, your turn under USM spotlight
One of the many positives when we went FBS football was leaving the EKU's, Morehead and Murray St's behind in a cloud of dust in state....We are now recognized universally as the third member of athletic prowess in this state when those other schools are so far behind its funny....10 or 15 years we might have been lumped in with those schools but not anymore.

Was laughing at some SBC posters saying EKU should get a serious look at being included in as a member when SB expands....While WKU campus has been completely transformed as recently has 10 years ago, EKUs has looked the same for 20 years minus their exceptional criminal justice department, they might as well be BIG BLUE Community College as all they care about is UK..EKU would be worse than Eastern Michigan is in FBS...
