All this thread is accomplishing is:
1. Inviting idoitic expansion chat
2. A chance for ECU posters to stir the pot

C-USA will get a taste of what a 16 team league is like this basketball season. Maybe they'll want to pursue 16 again down the road if they like how it works.
There is very little difference between lower level FBS and upper level FCS. Look at the facilities and attendance figures of schools like App State and JMU and compare them to everyone in CUSA/MAC/Sun Belt. They are near top for every conference and we also play against very small time programs. I think some posters on here are very quick to forget their school's FCS roots.
We are no ODU. You are correct about that, but they are no JMU either. In Virginia, the most applied to schools in the state are JMU, VA Tech, and UVA. The reason for their popularity is because they have the total package when it comes to academics, athletics, and overall college atmosphere. So, yes ODU has a lot of upside and potential, but there is stuff we can offer prospective conferences that they cannot.

RE: Expansion may not be over for CUSA
If CUSA lost 2, what are the odds they stay at 12 given the payouts are capped at 12 teams?
I would think that odds are in favor of staying at 12 given the payout issue and lack of market programs available. That is likely why CUSA backed off on 16 which at one time they were going to do.

No idea about CUSA's future plans, but maybe the Commish offers some insight: ODUBLitz.COM
Quote:Banowsky has a laissez-faire philosophy toward schools leaving his conference.
"We approach things a little differently than other conferences," he said. "We expect our members to be a part of the team while they're here. We expect them to be open with us and to follow the rules.
"But if universities feel like it's in their best interest to re-associate somewhere else, we generally pat them on the back and thank them for their contributions to the league."

Yes, but Banowsky would love to. Been trying for years, but fortunately has been turned back by the AD's & Presidents in prior attempts.
The article actually sounds like conjecture by the writer as he's going over several scenarios.
Personally, I'd rather C-USA stopped at 12 members, 16 is way too many.

Truth
Conference USA presidents met in Dallas in June and decided no expansion.
Quote:But C-USA presidents decided not to pursue a 16-team model for the foreseeable future as CBSSports.com first reported Tuesday. This closes the door on small-conference moves and probably limits the number of FCS schools transitioning into the College Football Playoff revenue pie.

Done.

RE: Expansion may not be over for CUSA
Banowsky would go to 20 if he could. Gives him a bigger empire to run and more $$$. This was especially true when the belief was that adding more teams meant more payout revenue, but that all changed when the cap at 12 was announced. It is now hard to justify going above 12 for the G5 conferences, especially if we are entering a period of stability and you don't have to hedge against losing more programs.

I agree, I think 12 is the perfect size for football anyway. 5 division games and 3 against the other division. Play every team in other division two out of every 4 years.

Fun fact... Marshall University is an older Virginia school than ODU and JMU.

That's absolutely correct!
Marshall was founded in the 1830s; well before the secession of West Virginia.

RE: Expansion may not be over for CUSA
The reason UTEP did not accept the MWC was:
1. We thought SMU, Houston and Tulsa would stay in CUSA
2. We didn't think SDSU and Boise St. would return to MWC
The key is BYU. BYU has been offered a deal similar to that of Boise St. Any BSU football game not picked up by the ESPN and CBS sports contracts can be sold on the open market and BSU gets all the money for it. The other thing that is playing on BYU is how well it will do obtaining a bowl spot as an independent. On the basketball side BYU would like to be in the MWC. The MWC is a power when it comes to basketball, they had five teams in the NCAA last season. They did not like the fact that they didn't get an at large NCAA bid with a 21-11 record and rpi of 63. The MWC is also looking at how CUSA will handle a football schedule with 14 teams this season. If BYU football doesn't get a good bowl this year then look for them and UTEP to go the MWC. The announcement would come after the CUSA basketball tournament in El Paso and would take effect after the 2014-2015 season, which would put UTEP in the same position as ECU, Tulsa and Tulane this season.

Stan pass me whatever you are smoking. 21-11 with a 63 RPI would not get you in the Dance even if BYU played in the Big Ten or ACC.

The MWC tv/distribution deal is a travshamockery, but your description of it is pretty much completely wrong. The sham system the MWC has devised might allow BYU to be equally compensated to what it is making now if ESPN decided it wanted BYU in the MWC, but BYU isn't joining the MWC because Utah is in a P5 league as well as other reasons.
Boise would probably like 14 because they could go to the West. But the money isn't going to be there and no one is going to vote themselves another paycut. The Western schools would probably want Hawaii in as a full voting member if MST or CST teams were added in order to balance votes. And the hobocheap Rockies schools don't seem interested in flying to Hawaii.
Utep doesn't get you into the Texas market anyway. It just doubles the MWC presence in the ABQ/El Paso area. No bueno. I don't see it happening.

One problem both Arkansas state and Louisiana are no where near bottom FBS anymore. So adding Theses 2 teams would add to the top of CUSA not the bottom hopefuls like JMU
