so we are talking since in the early 90s when arkansas left, the mid 90s when the b12 was formed, & 2010 when the first round of realignment struck the b12. is that all the work of the same 2 guys? sure baylor had help but I dont think baylor could pull all that off so many times.

no disrespect to the bears but id say theres no way that duke doesnt have the same political pull within their state as well. dukes a pretty powerful school with their alumni base.

Not sure what you are talking about. Baylors political connections helped them once and only once. The entire episode came to head in early 1993. While talks for a full merger of the SWC and Big-8 were slowly proceeding, a back room deal was made to simply add Texas and Texas A&M to create a 10 team Big-8. As news of the move spread to Austin, Ann Richards, a Baylor alum, was able to arm twist to get Baylor included. A Texas Tech graduate, Bob Bulloch, was the Lt Governor (in Texas, the Lt Gov wields more power than the governor). Bulloch aided Richards in this endeavor in exchange for Texas Tech being included. The arm twisting basically consisted of threatening to torpedo major campus construction projects and funding formulas. It was lucky happenstance that those two schools had alumni in the right place at the right time. For instance, if the same thing occurred today, Houston wields more political power than either of those two schools and might have been the lucky lottery winner.

im talking when arkansas left & almost had aggie/ut go with them. im not sure what your take on it but ive seen a lot of articles about how that almost happened.

but thanks you do prove my point that having the political power can alter conf. realignment. I just dont see how duke/wf have a hard time controlling NC politicians. Texas has a weird joint school funding distribution setup (i forget what its called) with their schools that gives a few politicians most of the power over these schools. with NC the dont have that so even if the gov. of NC is an ECU grad im willing to bet he cant pull it off quite as well as what happened in texas, he just doesnt have the same leverage, but he does have 2 private schools going against him which can be tough to deal with.

RE: if i had to pick the g5 schools most likely to get into d4......
This is an impressive troll job. He knew exactly what fan bases to go after and did it. Good work.

this isnt a troll. however i do know that uconn, temple, cincy, & ecu are well represented on this board. so yes it can appear that i chose wisely with the schools that dont get in, but if you think about it.....

i have a full explanation for this and why i made it this way, however i do enjoy reading these responses.

however a quick summary about the 4 fanbases getting left out, hes a question yall should answer

cincy has been at the highest level of cfb for 80+ years, and yet they have yet to establish a rivalry with any power school. why is that?

uconn- is 10 years removed from FCS, in a bad region of the country for a FB program and time & time again got passed over by the acc. why would the acc suddenly want them now? why do they deserve to be in over schools like utah st. & smu who have extended history at the highest level of cfb?

temple football has been a roller coaster ride for the last decade. they came one vote away from being disbanded, and got kicked out of the big east. why would the p5 have enough faith in this football program to invest a p5 slot in them.

ecu- they have 4 in states to compete with. the south is a recruiting hot bed and do the 4 NC schools want to make a move that elevates another regional program? what about georgia, fla, alabama etc. if ECU can be elevated then you know that just opens the door for USF/UCF, which then opens the door for UAB, troy, appy state, georgia state etc. to grow into future d4 schools. things are good for the power schools in the south. their FB is blowing the rest of the NCAA away, population is growing, the pie is getting bigger but the division stays the same. the last thing they want is to have a 2 way divide in their states turn into a 4 way divide.

So you're saying our state government is going to ignore the economic impacts on an area of the state with 2m+ people to appease two small private schools? I just don't see it happening.

Baylor was threatened to be kicked out of the car that Texas and co. were riding in. Ecu just wants to get in to the car with State, Unc, Wake and Duke. The small schools plus Ecu are just going to have to squeeze in the back seat!

One thing you have me interested in is where our state reps went to school. I randomly picked two and they both went to UMD...after that I was a bit disgusted and stopped looking.

my whole theory is that the best schools dont get in.

cupcakes to feed the weaker p5 schools to remain bowl eligible, unsaturated markets, politics, rivalries, history, recruiting grounds etc.

name cincys go-to rival with a power school

(lv doesnt count because they didnt become a power school until this year. and even if they did count, the series is barely 50 games which isnt that much considering you have played miami 117 times)

Any list that doesn't include UConn in the top section is moronic.

Yes and just like every theory or scholarly article ever written, it is intensely peer reviewed. While yours is pretty unpopular on this board, if you can argue your case with facts then you have a solid argument.... as for if it happens? Who knows... time will tell. I hope you're wrong but here's credit to thinking outside the box. 04-cheers

all it really takes is one school who can get the right politician on their side. and i think ECUs problems are not limited to NC. college football is growing in the south and ECU represents progress for a lot of the non-power southern schools. its like the domino theory. florida has usf/ucf on the rise, georgia/alabama just got two new FBS schools each. I think virginia is adding two as well. I think Louisiana FB is seeing some tremendous growth and its hard to say that LSU isnt keeping a watchful eye on the 4 fellow fbs schools there. I can see the SEC & ACC very well lining up against them.

its the same with uconn. they dont have an in-state private to screw them, but they do have every northeast school knowing that uconns presence only thins the limited northeast recruiting pool that much more.

while having 4 in-state power schools is already a big problem for ECU, the problem here is the ACC/SEC

Heck, if the P5 wants to include the rest of the flagships and just have a league of a few elite privates, ___ State university and University of ____ I could see them being snotty enough to do that.

Do I think it will ever happen? Heck no. Any good flagship is pretty much gobbled up (Uconn excluded). I'll add that many of the major unsaturated markets either already have a team, are made up of transplants, or have a weak college sports culture. None of which will sustain a major program.

This, plus that was for Baylor's inclusion. Plus what's good for ECU is good for a large chunk of the state.

NC does not have Texas oil money where we can just afford to ignore revenue boosters. With ECU added in D4 it's a huge boost to the state that NC politicians can't ignore. While some will try, I believe the majority of them want what's best for the state of NC.

My point exactly. It behooves them to include us. Maybe not as a member of the ACC, but by pushing the conference we are in for D4 inclusion.

All the above is absolute truth.

so we are talking since in the early 90s when arkansas left, the mid 90s when the b12 was formed, & 2010 when the first round of realignment struck the b12. is that all the work of the same 2 guys? sure baylor had help but I dont think baylor could pull all that off so many times.

no disrespect to the bears but id say theres no way that duke doesnt have the same political pull within their state as well. dukes a pretty powerful school with their alumni base.

All the above is absolute truth.

the following wasnt written by me.

In Texas, all public schools are allowed to feed from the Texas Permanent School Fund and the Permanent University Fund. Which are VERY WEALTHY funds, think BILLIONS, and the politicians have used this as a way to control schools. If a school pisses off a powerful political wag, they almost always threaten to cut that school off from the Permanent School Fund coffers. This threat gets the school back in line very, very quickly.

i think a big component of these stories they doesnt get mentioned is texas's unusual university funding system which gives politicians a lot more leverage.
