Football Direction?
So with the latest let downs for our beloved football team, what do you think about the direction the football program is going in? Personally, I didn't expect Liberty to win the games they did lose but if you put your team in those situations where winning is probable, you need to close the deal and finish off the opponent. Wins over an in-state program going FBS could have been huge, and beating the #4/6 ranked FCS team could have been huge. Liberty pretty much lost it's chance at FCS playoffs which again could have been huge.
Liberty wants to be FBS and they have shunned Liberty. Some of it has to do with the religious aspect, being a private institution, and having the high amount of online students. Those are things that are probably never going to change. But, one thing that the FBS schools can use against Liberty is their uninspiring performance on the field and court. This year could have been the time to start changing that stigma towards our football program but the eggs we laid in the last few losses really destroyed any chance of that this year.
So is Liberty's football program improving or declining? I would say it is slightly declining at the moment. Turner Gill hasn't worked miracles yet. He had several let down losses against teams we should have beat either because we are more talented or because we were in a position to win but we didn't. We've been leapfrogged by Coastal Carolina in the conference pecking order. Next season will be extremely telling if we are going the right direction or not, but it could be too late by then. If the Sun Belt were to add James Madison and/or Missouri State to their conference, that could be the last ticket punched to FBS for a long time.
