Do you find it strange that the Big East conference meetings are now over and this (at least for me) is the first news article about those meetings? And it comes after the meetings have concluded?

With the ACC meetings, there was at least one article each day of the meetings and the same appears to be true about the Big 12.

Cheers,
Neil

-- true....any thoughts as to the reasoning behind the silence? I was under the impression that the BE football meetings have yet to take place

Jackson

Anything's possible I suppose, but Katz said the Big East conference spring meetings wrapped up on Wednesday. I believe in the past the football schools met first, then the basketball schools joined them so they could all present a unified front when the Spring meetings concluded.

As for why the silence, I'm not sure. It seems to be a done deal since we heard that there was a new contract agreed to more than a month ago. Maybe ESPN, CBS, ABC want it on the QT due to negotiations with other conferences? Or perhaps the deal reveals some of those long-range impacts Pitt's AD alluded to?

Also, I'm surprised more Louisville fans haven't chimed in with some tidbits of info. I believe Jurich was one of the prime negotiators for the Big East side.

Cheers,
Neil

Wow if all those stats are true, expect a big push by the TVs for Big East basketball. The BE pretty much schooled every conference in TV last season for basketball. I mean highest rated regular season espn game, highest rated sunday CBS game, Highest rated conference tourney game. Thats some good stuff.

While, I'm a fan of splitting, thats only because thats what I believe is best for Uconn. But if the BE can use their basketball to get their football a better deal and more on air time then so be it. As long as Uconn succeeds in the long run, I really don't care much.

Also good to hear positive press on the football end. So much better than last season when 99 percent of the articles are negative. Thanks West Virginia, you guys are by far my second favorite team in the Big East.

Anyone else feel the football season to be so much more taxing than the basketball season. I mean in basketball, my main concern is Uconn, while I root for BE members whether they lose of not doesn't make a difference. In the footbal side, I freakin have to worry about all 8 teams. I was so upside last year when Louisville lost to USF and WVa lost to Va Tech. This year every UL and WVa games gonna make me nervious too.

I'm not convinced a split is not coming. Not at all. We NEED a ninth team. These are the times that make me a Big East fan for one reason and one reason only... BCS access. To get a good 9th football member you'd have to offer full membership. Otherwise you end up with junior varsity wannabe's like Navy, Army, Temple, etc...

I am just posting the article for future reference:

Bigger Big East looks forward to new TV deal
Katz
By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

The Big East breakup that was supposed to happen after the ACC lured three of its members away never happened.

The assumption that the league would last only five years after it then added five Conference USA teams to get to 16 also seems to have been overblown.

The first year of the new Big East, the largest conference in the country and only the second 16-team conference ever in Division I, was a rousing success. And with a pending rich TV contract with partners at ESPN/ABC and CBS, the league is looking like it might be the strongest it has ever been.

The Big East wrapped up its annual spring meetings in Florida on Wednesday and there are no signs the league is on the verge of any type of split. While there are some natural differences of opinion on scheduling, the conference tournament and recruiting among the 16 coaches, no one is even close to looking at a separation -- I-A football school or not.

"If we brought our presidents in and told them all that they could leave tomorrow with no obligations, they wouldn't leave and neither would any of the ADs," Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said Thursday upon returning from Florida. "There is a renewed sense of optimism with the success we've had in football, basketball and the contract negotiations [for TV rights] that we're all excited about."
.

When the ACC took Miami, Virginia Tech and (a year later) Boston College, the Big East was left with only five schools that don't play I-A football (St. John's, Seton Hall, Providence, Villanova and Georgetown). The NCAA requires that a conference have six members stay together for five continuous years to maintain an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, so if those five had split off, they wouldn't have had an auto bid. The addition of Marquette and DePaul as part of the five-team group that came from C-USA, though, gave the league seven non-I-A football schools, which put them in position to leave after five seasons if there was discord.

"We didn't want anybody to be damaged, and that's why we required in the initial agreement five years," Tranghese said. "People were interpreting the five years as if to mean that was it for the conference. If someone wants to leave in 10 years, 12 years or 15 years, they can. But I don't think you'll ever see us visit this unless a group is going to come in and say they're going to leave. It's not on the agenda. Everybody in the league has a good taste of what happened this year."

The good vibe actually started with football, the sport the Big East was most criticized for when the league was reconfigured. West Virginia's win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in January was probably the most significant single victory for the conference this year.

"That had a lot to do with our perception," Tranghese said. "That [game] made everyone take a step back and say these guys are pretty good. Up until then, all we heard was criticism. The win gave us credibility and quieted the critics."

The Big East didn't win the national title in men's basketball, but it had two No. 1 seeds in Connecticut and Villanova and landed a record eight teams in the 65-team field. The biggest basketball buzz, though, came from the TV ratings. According to Tranghese, the conference title game between Pitt and Syracuse at Madison Square Garden was the most viewed conference title game (2.6 rating) on ESPN since the 1998 ACC championship game. The semifinal game between Syracuse and Georgetown drew a 1.5, the highest for a semifinal since 1996. Even the noon quarterfinal tipoff between Syracuse and Connecticut drew a 1.0, the highest-rated noon tourney game ever on ESPN.

In the regular season, the 1.6 for the Connecticut-Villanova Big Monday game was the highest-rated for that event this past season and the UConn-Louisville Saturday night game drew a 1.3, the highest ranking GameDay game in its two-year existence. Tranghese also said CBS's Louisville-Connecticut game drew a 2.7, the highest-rated Sunday afternoon game for the network last season.

The buzz extended to demand for tickets as well. Tranghese said the 12-team Big East tournament was the toughest ticket it has ever been. The league's coaches want all 16 teams in the event, but Tranghese said they'll have to take it up with their schools' presidents. No president currently is pushing it, so it will likely stay at 12 for the foreseeable future.

Tranghese said he can't talk about the next television contract, slated to begin in 2007-08, but it is anticipated to be the richest ever for the conference and will grant it a record number of exposures. There could be multiple national nights on ESPN as well as the weekend games on CBS. The conference tournament is exclusive to ESPN, with every game being televised. A number of coaches have discussed how impressed they were with the deal.

Collectively, the number of appearances on CBS and ESPN is supposed to be equal or better than what any other conference is receiving.

"This deal will stun a lot of people," Tranghese said.

The conference didn't officially vote on raising the number of conference games from 16 to 18 in 2007-08, but it is expected to be voted on by the athletic directors and presidents this summer and be in place in time for the new TV contract.

The magnitude of the new deal was hammered home at the meeting. The underlying message: If the league ever split and tried to make deals with the same TV partners, they wouldn't collectively add up to the one the 16-team Big East is receiving.

"When we started this, it was all about basic survival and to protect the current institutions," Tranghese said. "People assumed it wouldn't last. But after going through one year, the publicity and exposure everyone has received, no one wants to split."

The only ways it?s a good deal if football schools get to keep 80% of the basketball TV contract. Notices the basketballs TV ratings are high when they show football schools playing basketball games. Anything less then that we?ll split and get OUR money with our own conference. If we don?t get to keep 80% of the TV deal it is not good for us.

Speak for yourself.

Last I checked, these schools are, and will remain, full members in the Big East conference.

Ok I dont see aproblem with this announcement. the split if it happens will be in 2010, so its great that until that time the Big East has signed a better deal for its TV coverage.

Just because he's saying there won't be a split doesn't mean that they won't add 1 football only school.

Jurich was saying on the radio a couple of weeks ago that the Big East was signing a lucrative tv deal. He also mentioned that there will be "no" split taking place which sucks. We need a 9th team in the worst way, but like someone said earlier right now money is the driving force.

I complete agree! Even though we want a split it's nice getting the same type of respect and dollars as conferences like the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, SEC, etc. Not saying we're equal to them in money but that we're somewhat similar respect as them and getting big money contracts like them. We may still be the 6th wheel but we're hanging with them step-for-step!

I think people who want the split would be satisfied a good bit by adding a 9th member. So some of the rumblings about not adding a 9th member so that the football schools can split more money is ridiculous. Give us a 9th member and scheduling will be unbelievably easier!

What confuses you? I did speak for myself. That is a pretty apparent opinion if you ask me. Furthermore it was more an emotional gut response than a true feeling toward you guys. I just get darn frustrated with this whole thing sometimes.

I'm very interested in seeing the new football contract.

To think that conference TV contracts would be higher after the raid, and after one year, is simply amazing. I commend everybody in charge of contract negotiations.

I still want a split, though.

If it did go to 18 who would those two schools be? There are many to consider. Do you add ECU and Charlotte to keep it geographical with one football and one not both in a border state to where we are now and to dent the ACC market? Do you go UCF and and an eastern basketball school? Did George Mason and its huge enrollment and desirable location play its way into consideration? George washington?Memphis? I don't think UC will allow XU or Dayton, WVU would not allow Marshall? St. Louis is too far west. Umass would add back some northeast market lost by BC? Do you still try to lure the ARmy/Navy slpit deal and then a basketball school? Temple again? It could be interesting!

I doubt UC would care about Dayton... but at the same time, I'm not sure Dayton would want to leave Xavier. Xavier bailed them out after the Great Midwest (UC S-C-R-E-W-E-D Dayton in that deal) to help get them into the A10, I don't think UD would forget about that.

I don't think UC had anything to do with UD being left out of CUSA. Huggs did not want them in the Great Midwest but he says he never would have asked for them to be out once they were in etc. UD was just plain awful at that point and have only themselves to blame. They won about three games in the Great Midwest total. UC had everything to do with XU being left out of the Big East. Depaul took the last spot thanks to our suggestion of the Chicago market etc. and travel partne for Marquette.
