"Distasteful" MLK Frat Party
"Basketball jerseys, gang signs, and watermelon shaped cups"
This brings up a good question, is this actually hurtful and insulting or this an instance of oversensitivity?
Does it make people angry because it strikes too close to home or because it's a misrepresentation?
Finally, is ASU right in suspending the fraternity? Also, is the Civil Rights leader correct in saying that all the kids should be expelled?
So when does the 'dialogue' start?

Civil rights leader can go **** himself. If he's so quick to draw a line between "us" and "them" then he better start spending more time on his personal "us."
ASU is w/in their rights to suspend the fraternity.

Extremely distasteful and should be shunned by the community; however, ASU took it too far in suspending the fraternity IMO. They were just "expressing themselves", albeit poorly. Arizona State is not a private school and the party broke no laws. Classic free speech. What the university should have done is prosecuted the underage drinking, public intoxication, and drug possession and usage to the fullest extent, assuming that was going on as well, as well as shaming in the papers.

I disagree Ever... frats represent the university, so the university did the right thing (IMO). (Free speech does not mean there are no repercussions from your speaking up).
I don't agree with the civil rights attorney about expelling all the students though.

Actually, it does mean just that. At least no repercussions from the gov't.

I believe ASU has the right to suspend any frat so long as they have some sort of due process.

okay, no repercussions from the govt, but from an individual entity (which I think the school would fall in that category), I'd say it wouldn''t qualify here.. I'd have to think about it though.

But this is a state school.
I believe ASU can do what it likes w/ frats, they have no intrinsic rights. But citizens do (and I'm assuming these are citizens).

Question is, why post this stuff on social media?

Why do young people post all sorts of stuff on social media that does nothing but scream "idiot" when you see it. I mean, didn't some clown post his theft exploits on social media?

That's why I said I'd have to think on this one, Torch. I mean you can argue that the schools actions have nothing to do with the govt suppressing free speech, Torch.
I can see both sides on this one, but I'm leaning toward the school taking the right steps with the suspension.

If the scull suspended the students I'd be there with you but organizations such as frats exist only with the permission of the school.

I think so.
What I'm saying is, what they did was wrong.. Call it a MLK Party and dress like a bad stereotype for African Americans, that's wrong on so many levels.. To post it on Twitter and Facebook, beyond dumb. The frat is getting what it deserves. You can bet your sweet butt if this had happened in at a school in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi (you get the picture) the schools would be under fire. ASU has done the right thing.
The kids being expelled are another argument. They're just guilty of following along and posting pictures. I don't think they should be expelled, I think losing their frat and the shame with that along with the dumb pictures are punishment enough. They're kids, we were all there (some are there now), we all did dumb things and took pictures of it. Luckily we didn't have FB or Twitter to post it.

When my sister was at LSU they had these kinds of parties. They'd buy KFC, Watermelon, and Malt Liquor.

ugh
and it wasn't a 'ugh-i'm so offended by racism' but an 'ugh-why are so many bits of racial humor completely unfunny?' It's always just so simple and predictable.
