Agreed.

Sorry for the delay over the weekend, but we're still in wrestling season.

So, we're about to complete the first 100 songs. I like this next 10, enjoyable from top to bottom. Some real depth when these are in the bottom quintile

401 Good Rockin at Midnight -- The Honeydrippers-- One of those 80s songs that has unfortunately disappeared. Enjoyable, and I'd certainly like to hear it more than Cheap Trick's Surrender, wh/ gets a ton of airplay in both DC and Baltimore. Such is corporate radio I suppose.
402 Brothers in Arms -- Dire Straits-- Another song from this great album, but I may focus on it too much.
403 Lay Down Sally -- Eric Clapton--
404 Join Together -- The Who
405 Every Little Thing She Does -- Police
406 Back in the Saddle Again -- Aerosmith
407 American Girl -- Tom Petty
408 My Best Friends Girl -- The Cars
409 Lonely Ol' Night -- John Mellencamp
410 China Girl -- David Bowie-- Thin white duke made a splash in the 80s w/ his irrepressible style and elegance

@ 406 "Back in the Saddle Again"
--heard it first on a double cd of Aerosmith Hits I bought way back in 2000. I liked it, sound like "their 70s sound."

@ 407 "American Girl"
--I like some Tom Petty every now and then and while this song arguably has its place in music history I don't care for it. I liked more of his material on Full Moon Fever and Learning to Fly.

391 Rock the Casbah -- The Clash
392 Rock and Roll All Night -- Kiss-- I think this song just has to make the list
393 Rock of Ages -- Def Leppard
394 Two Tickets to Paradise -- Eddie Money
395 Don't Fear the Reaper -- Blue Oyster Cult
396 She's Not There -- The Zombies-- I love cheesy 1960s organ.
397 Rumbleseat -- John Mellencamp-- I like the beat in this song during the stanza portion. Similar to some others on the list. Easy to forget this song, and while it's not a smash, it shouldn't be ignored either.
398 Boys are Back in Town -- Thin Lizzie-- I can't help but think of Toy Story commercials when I hear this on the radio...and it's on the radio too much.
399 Lunatic Fringe -- Red Rider-- I know you're out there, even if corporate radio doesn't.
400 This Note's for You -- Neil Young

402 Brothers in Arms -- Dire Straits-- Another song from this great album, but I may focus on it too much. [Another? Where's the first? In any case, I agree this is a great album and if it was my list it would be heavily populated with songs from this album.]
403 Lay Down Sally -- Eric Clapton-- [LOVE this song. Might have it higher on my list.]
404 Join Together -- The Who
405 Every Little Thing She Does -- Police
406 Back in the Saddle Again -- Aerosmith
407 American Girl -- Tom Petty [So much great stuff going on in this song. For me it epitomizes classic - certainly fits my criteria above.]
408 My Best Friends Girl -- The Cars
409 Lonely Ol' Night -- John Mellencamp
410 China Girl -- David Bowie-- Thin white duke made a splash in the 80s w/ his irrepressible style and elegance [67 places HIGHER than Space Oddity? Holy moley. Another where I guess I'm going to be in the minority. I really felt like the Let's Dance album was mostly weak. Not as bad, but somewhat akin to Rod Stewart's Blondes Have More Fun tribute to disco. Warning: If "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" is on this list, there are going to be more angry words. All in all, China Girl is not the worst on that album but the video always creeped me out.]

Completion of the bottom quintile is a good place to share a list I've been keeping in my head of bands that I might have expected to see by now. Either because they've got a big enough, high enough quality catalog that I would guess some of their work would have shown up by now, or because they're a fair-to-middlin' band with maybe a tune or two that could sneak in down low.

[Note: One of the first on this list was going to be Dire Straits but you got 'em in in the last group. Good on ya.]

U2
Boston
Bob Marley (Does reggae belong here? Debatable for sure but Marley's catalog is pretty deep.)
Bob Dylan
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
The Ramones
The Clash (ETA: You just added Rock the Casbah while I was typing this message!)
Emerson Lake and Palmer
ELO/Electric Light Orchestra
Fleetwood Mac
Depeche Mode
The Cure
The Smiths
Duran Duran
Siouxie and the Banshees
Blondie
Prince

Caveats: I'm not suggesting these SHOULD be on the list, nor that I particularly even like all these bands, but I keep wondering "I wonder if they'll show up in the next group". I guess this just reinforces the point that you are having to make very interesting and sometimes difficult choices to slot all this music.

I'll only comment on a few, so as not to give it all away.

I love Bob Marley, but in general I don't have reggae on the list. (Police aficionados can challenge that if they want)
U2- I could fill a lot of slots w/ U2. I backed off of them to get more variety, especially since I think that Joshua Tree songs all sound alike.
Dylan- Someone could rank Dylan's 500 best, and it would be a good list. He's a victim of his own talent.

386 Touch of Grey -- Grateful Dead
387 Desire -- U2
388 The Long and Winding Road -- Beatles
389 Wild Thing -- Jimi Hendrix
390 Love Street -- The Doors-- A bit of the psychedelic here, but I might revise this lower.

Ok, so we peak this set w/ a very anti-war song (I prefer this version). While I don't want to get too political, obviously war protests were a big part of classical rock. I have an observation that bothers me. First, there is the higher ed bubble, where going to college offers a poor ROI for many degrees. Then there is a big push to get veterans hired. Now, I think getting jobs for veterans is a great plan, and it stuns me that they were discriminated against in the past, but it's combining those two issues that bothers me.

It seems as though TPTB are pushing hoards of young people away from college and into the military; arguably to fight in wars that are of even less US' concern than Viet Nam.

Send this post to the Spin Room if you must, but consider even further, I'm labeled as far right wing, and this is on my mind.

Cheap Trick basically wrote and performed the songs that
the Beatles would have if they hadn’t broken up.

I’m not really comparing the two groups, but it’s pretty much impossible not
to imagine Paul, John, George and Ringo playing any Cheap Trick song… even Surrender.

Ok, we've got some traction, so I'll keep 'em moving.

371 One of these Nights -- The Eagles
372 Dixie Chicken -- Little Feat-- I don't like Little Feat at all, but maybe now bitcruncher will stop harassing me!
373 Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band -- Beatles
374 I Miss You -- Rolling Stones
375 Radar Love -- Golden Earring- Hmm, too high?
376 Fat Bottom Girls -- Queen-- Too low? (haha, that's a joke son!)
377 The Fly -- U2
378 You Got Another Think Coming -- Judas Priest-- Needed something hard on this section
379 Jet Airliner -- Steve Miller
380 Satisfaction Guaranteed -- The Firm-- Again, another 80's song lost to the ravages of time. Maybe, maybe you'll get this on XM, if they've finally gone thru their 6 hr daily allotment of Duran Duran.

I think your point is a good one, although I'm not sure how to reconcile it with the latest proposed budget. And if it's ok to have a list with a bunch of war-related songs here, it ought to be ok to talk (a little bit) about their message(s).

Not much to say here. I agree with you about not liking Little Feat, except maybe for Let it Roll. I think Radar Love is ok here. The Firm - I don't think much of them. The fact that Satisfaction Guaranteed is here makes me think Radioactive is going to be even higher, and that makes me sad. Duran Duran are mostly crap but complaining that they're getting airplay over The Firm? Kind of like complaining about being served lima beans as you wait for brussels sprouts.

And Aphid reminds me that Cheap Trick should have been on my list of bands notably missing from the lower quintile. ETA: also meant to put Beach Boys on that list.

RE: Top 500 (361-370)
Maybe I'm trying too hard, but I thought you guys would catch some of the "puns" peppered through the list.

Next up, some very reliable material

351 Manic Depression -- Jimi Hendrix-- I think I'm a Hendrix fan.
352 Mothers Little Helper -- Rolling Stones-- Another one that's faded from the airwaves. Why?
353 Can't Explain -- The Who
354 The Man's too Strong -- Dire Straits
355 Radioactive -- The Firm-- Taking physics when this was popular made for some good times. I hear a recent song w/ radioactive in the title, and I can't help but think "poser".
356 Good Times Bad Times -- Led Zeppelin-- I've certainly had my share
357 Black Friday -- Steeley Dan
358 No Time Left for You -- Guess Who
359 Hold Me -- Fleetwood Mac-- Probably part of the pop vs rock discussion.
360 Caught up in You -- .38 Special

@ 351
That is higher from Hendrix than some of your other selections? Weird.

@ 356
I also liked that tune from Led Zeppelin.

@ 349
--Decent VH track there ...still holding out to see where some of their others will rank.

@350
--The video was the best part about that song.

Ok, well let's keep rolling

331 Tumbling Dice -- Rolling Stones
332 Heart Breaker -- Led Zeppelin
333 Old Time Rock and Roll -- Bob Seger
334 Jump -- Van Halen
335 Where the Streets Have no Name -- U2
336 FM -- Steeley Dan-- This was part of the soundtrack for a movie by the same name "FM". It has many similarities to the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati, wh/ the producers claim were coincidental, although both were based on KMET in LA, and both came out in 1978. The full irony of course being that WKRP was an AM station, a big part of the plot. In one WKRP episode they have a contest to name six songs, where brief excerpts are played rapidly in succession. One of those was Tumbling Dice...the leader of this section.
337 Owner of a Lonely Heart -- Yes
338 Magic Carpet Ride -- Steppenwolf-- 70s rock sound
339 Let it Be -- Beatles
340 Smoke on the Water -- Deep Purple-- 70s rock sound
