Don't know much about the guy, but seems like a young up and comer at a good mid-major program

great hire. he was definitely on my short list of guys I wanted at ODU before we hired Jeff Jones. I hope he's successful there as a HC. at least most of the time :)

Agree. There is very little to admire about the VCU program. Coach Rhoades is the exception. Congratulations, Owls.

We discussed him on the Houston sites as a possible replacement for Dickey. If he brings the Smart defensive style to Rice the Owls will be fun to watch.

Reportedly working on a five-year contract.

'Rhoades, 40, emerged as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation during the past five seasons as associate head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, which reached the Final Four at Reliant Stadium in 2011.

"That's why it was so attractive — because it's Rice," Rhoades said. "Because of their vision. I'm not afraid or scared of that. I want that."'

Rest of article is in this thread on Rice Board:

Other than cross state rivalry, is there something particular about them? I work with VCU students quite a bit, and like the group quite a lot. Love to watch their hoops team, except when they are blowing us out.

It's purely just a vicious rivalry. I have tons of VCU grad friends and unless we're talking basketball we get a long just fine. That might also be because most of my friends aren't into sports so the topic doesn't come up around them.

As one who has known Mike a long time, I can assure you, Rice could not have hired a better guy or a better basketball coach. Rice is now my 2nd favorite CUSA team.

It's mostly a function of too many CAA conference tournaments permanently played in their back yard, in which their "host" fan base displayed an utter lack of grace.

Aside from that, well yeah okay, it might be that they beat us a bit too often.

Crap, I was hoping we left the "foul every possession" mentality when we left VCU and the A10. Oh well.

Anyway, hope this works out well for Rice. Improving the league is a must.

Excellent. I've always believed that mid majors need to hire up and comers as opposed to experienced coaches who are passed their prime.
