Scott Weiland IMO has about the same range as AXL. They both can sing a lot of different styles.

It’s a matter of opinion, no one would argue that John Lydon has a
great voice... but there’s not a better sound for Public Image Ltd.

It's not so much the range but how you use the vocals within the range. To your point AA, Axl was the perfect fit stylistically for a band like GnR who also happened to have a dynamic vocal range. However, no one will ever convince me that Axl was a better vocalist than Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Freddy Mercury, Bono, Robert Plant, etc.
