Isn't Ragnar famous because of what his kids did more than what his accomplishments were.

Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. The only man to put a stop to Napolean, TWICE!

Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. Put an end to the "world famous" Afrika Corps, and its celebrated commander Rommel, in North Africa.

Wow, five pages and no mention of Washington?!

Certainly not the best military commander, but remove him from the revolution and there isn't one.

Needless to say my favorite General.

George Washington lost every battle he ever fought. He wasn't a great General. He's simply famous because he and a few men managed to survive long enough for the British to give up when the French got involved.

Every battle? Trenton? Yorktown?
I did note he wasn't a great battle commander and he did lose more than he won. Simply keeping the Continental Army together as long as he did was a task few (if any) other Americans could have accomplished.

Trenton was a large American force against a smaller German (Hessians) garrison. The Americans outnumbered the Hessians 2-1 there. Anybody could win under those conditions. It would take an idiot of monumental proportions to lose under those circumstances.

And I wouldn't exactly call Yorktown a victory accountable to George Washington. There were well over 5000 French Army troops led by the Comte de Rochambeau who played a key role, without whom Washington would have suffered another defeat. Without French help, and the fact that Britain was involved in wars in Thailand (Siam), Burma, India, China, Germany, Spain, and Russia during that same period of time, we'd be a British colony today.

It didn't help that the soldiers would run away when the battle started. Sure, he could have had something like the NKVD back there gunning down people as they fled, but he wasn't going to do that.

And they were definitely under-equipped also.
