i've only read two of his books, but i understand the sentiment. i absolutely loved the sound and the fury but loathed loathed absalom, absalom. i couldn't even tell you what the later was about, except that it was no bygone costume piece. i recall that from the jacket

dense and inaccessible. if someone is reading faulkner for any reason other than you were told to, that person is simply off their trolley.

It sounds like someone if off their trolley. There is a lot of great fiction by people who still reside above the ground.

It sounds to me like somebody is prejudiced against the living. Would you'd prefer to spend time with your favorite authors? There's plenty of space in your local cemetery.

honestly. stop and think. consider the entire body of work of all great fiction from, say, the elizabethans until today. think about how many of those writers are from our age. think further about now many of those are alive.
the thing pretty well answers itself. if nothing else, it's a matter of probability.

Terry Pratchett is an excellent author of satirical fiction, and has sold over 100 million copies of his books. He's in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease. But he's still living, and is still quite prolific. He's had one book released this year, 2 last year, and has 2 or 3 more coming out later this year. There are some living science fiction writers who are quite good. Although many tend to call it speculative fiction now, since a lot of early science fiction is becoming a reality. I probably have the largest private science fiction collection in the State of Tennessee, and it keeps on growing.
I don't read much fiction outside of sci-fi these days, since most other authors tend to bore the crap out of me. But saying that there are no living authors of fiction worth reading is rather ludicrous, since you don't read any of it. Sweeping generalizations are the product of shallow thinking. To say none of it is worth reading when you haven't read it all means you have closed your mind.
Now if you were talking about specific authors, I might agree. But it depends on the author, and whether I've read them or not. If it's not science fiction, there's a good possibility that I haven't read it.

The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, We The Living, and I saw her play once too. Once was more than enough on all of 'em.
It's not fiction. It's fantasy.

not to get into another one of these, but i like ayn rand. i take the play was anthem? i got to page 223 of ulysses and couldn't read any more. i give you credit. most people that loathe ayn only have heard of her and have a base sense of her principals. but why did you continue to read her?

RE: The book thread
"LEAK: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat", by Max Holland. Published 2012 by University Press of Kansas.
Explains what was really going on inside the FBI in 1969-73, and how the Bureau responded to the Watergate break-in. Also major insights into the Nixon White House, the Washington Post, and other elite national media.
Highly recommended if politics is interesting to you.
