I figure once we got into the "what if {insert general} had {Insert modern weapons}", this one would come up.

I've read Gingrich's 1945 book, and found it entertaining for the most part.. so I'm wondering what other "alternate historical timeline fiction" books you guys have read/recommend?

I have nothing. Most of these books are about the Civil War and WWII. I like to go further back in history than that.

A bit off topic, but a couple of weeks ago I watched The Rocketeer with my son.
That was great film, especially for an 8-year-old boy. But I had a difficult time explaining the nazí by proxy storyline.

I found myself frequently saying, "Yes, there were bad guys like that, but it didn’t happen that way”

Harry Turtledove wrote an entire series of alternate history books based on the assumption that the Confederacy won the Battle of Antietam and eventually captured Philadelphia, bringing an end to the war, and Southern Independence in 1862.

In the series, there was a Second Civil War in the 1880's, during WWI the CSA supported the Allies while the USA backed the Kaiser, and both sides got into it again during WWII.

I'll have to search it out, but there is a website where a random dude was writing alternate fiction where an entire Marine (?) battalion (?) was transported to Roman times. It was a really neat read.

Sounds like something Robert A. Heinlein would write.

Fatherland by Robert Harris

They also made it into a movie, broadcast on HBO starring Rutger Hauer.

It starts with How Few Remain which is a second war in the 1880's over the Confederacy buying itself a Pacific coastline from Mexico.

It then continues with The Great War Series, which is really good. This was the best of the entire series.

Then America Empire Series and Settling Accounts Series kind of gets to be just being a retelling of our real history with the Confederacy replacing Nazi Germany letter for letter and the US pretty much just replacing the Soviet Union.

Featherston = Hitler
Kentucky = Rheinland
Operation Blackbeard = Operation Barbarossa
Pittsburgh = Stalingrad

I think he started mailing-it-in with American Empire and went full-tilt IDGAF on Settling Accounts.

I enjoyed his Days of Infamy two book series about Japan invading Oahu as part of attacking Pearl Harbor.

His most famous book by far is Guns of the South, a standalone involving time travel and Robert E. Lee getting a ****-ton of AK-47s from the future. Its actually a pretty good book.

Isn't that usually the case? Almost always, in fact.

I hate that they put in those gang members (basically town ruffians) but never told their story. Him beating the biggest and baddest of them up would've been great fun.

Harry Turtledove also has a series called Cross-time traffic or something like that. It's geared to YA but still pretty good.
