RE: Why is Google celebrating the World Cup?
I'm not exactly the biggest soccer fan (I'm personally more interested in the NBA Finals), but we can't exactly deny that the World Cup is the single most popular sporting event in virtually every country (whether European, Latin American, African or Asian) outside of the US and Canada. The Olympics are comparatively inconsequential compared to the pressure involved with the World Cup in the rest of the world. Not sure what the problem is considering that Google is a global website.

I feel the exact same. I'm sure I'll watch the US games, and other games when I have nothing else to do, but I don't get riled up over the coverage it's getting here.

I guess that begs the question: Why does that matter Should we "get on board?"

Soccer has been around for centuries and it still isn't mainstream in the United States. Does that mean we have fallen behind, or maybe that we are unique? Maybe we are the trendsetters.

Soccer will never become mainstream in the United States without illegal immigration...

Foreigners like it. Clearly it's the devil.

Clearly you've misunderstood by concern, and used it to your advantage to fuuck around and make jokes.

The people are protesting the government because almost a billion of their tax dollars went towards building this arena. Get off yalls high horses, I don't care if this is liberal or not, it's the country turning on it's government for being fuucked over and cheated... Being fuucked over and cheated by your government sound familiar???

True, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't televise and promote the biggest sporting event in the world. I think the World Cup is similar to the Olympics, in that the masses will go all gung-ho over it for the month, then will forget about it for the next four years until the next one.

RE: Why is Google celebrating the World Cup?
Interesting World Cup fact: The 1994 World Cup, which was held here in the states, had a total attendance of nearly 3.6 million and an average attendance of nearly 69,000, remains the highest in World Cup history. (Source)

However, we used all of our huge football stadiums for the events, which are bigger and better facilities than what most of the world has but still impressive that we were able to pack over 93,000 for a single Soccer event.

I personally think FIFA needs to take away the 2022 World Cup from Qatar (since hundreds of migrant workers have already died building all the facilities) and bring it back to the states where the facilities and infrastructure already exists.

Meh. Did the fact that Detroit was and is going down an economic sinkhole mean that when it held the Super Bowl a few years ago, everyone had to be "OMG! NO ONE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THE SUPER BOWL BECAUSE DETROIT HAS A GAZILLION PROBLEMS!"? Does every time that the Super Bowl gets held in Miami, New Orleans or any other city mean that Google should only be concentrating on the crime and poverty going on in those areas and ignore an event that millions of people are watching?

Every country and virtually every city has its fair share of crappy problems, including the richest areas of the first world (like the US and Europe). The main attraction of sports is that it's the one place where all of that crap can be put aside for a few hours. I feel like I'm in bizarro world seeing people actually complain about Google having a World Cup theme. If people don't want to watch it, then don't watch it. Billions (with a "b") of other people, both liberal and conservative, are watching every moment.

As surprising as this might come to $EC fans, it's kind of a big deal.

It means, as sporting events go, it makes the BC$ title game look like the sack race at the county fair.

Oh ok, whew. Thanks for clarifying. 03-phew

FIFA and the IOC always bleed the host countries dry, while they rake in loads of money...that's why you see less and less countries bidding for these events.

Like a poster said above, the Olympics and World Cup are probably going to be awarded more and more to the US, West Europe more and more, where the infrastructure is already in place.

RE: Why is Google celebrating the World Cup?
Not to mention soccer is incredibly boring to watch. Just a bunch of little figures running around kicking a round ball with a constant change of possession. You get scores of 1 -0 or 2-3 03-zzz What kind of game should ever end in a tie?

Someone said the World Cup makes the BCS game look like a sack race.

The Super Bowl makes the World Cup look like a 3rd rate event.
