As to the topic, there is a line of thinking that these more girly men (not talking homsexual here) are possibly a product of their environment and/or eating practices. There was a lot of talk about estrogen products getting into water supplies (from women on the pill and chickens and cows on hormonal products, etc., and their waste ending up water recycling basins). Might be something to it. I know a couple of guys who are now suddenly getting testorone(SP) shots to add male hormones to their makeup after prior years of no deficiencies. Think it needs looking into.
Hard Core liberals buy into group think and group identity... this means that by default they are not going to be ragingly individualistic. The classic “masculine” behaviors and traits are not things that blend well with this type of mentality.
Face it, the classic male role is one of individual ability, certainly protection of the group/clan/family is important, but the male is the provider and while he may freely give of his skills to help others, and work with others for common goals, he does not feel guilty about being better at something than another male, or feel guilty that if he does not need help to accomplish tasks.
Individualism, rugged individualism is the complete antithesis of the liberal world view, so its not all that suprising that classical male traits are less pronounced in those who subscribe to the liberal mindset.
For one thing, if you’re not an especially manly specimen by genetic gifts, then it’s difficult to look and act manly and be taken seriously. For instance, it takes some effort in the gym and in watching your speech and mannerisms. Also, the standards are higher if you’re trying to appear manly. You have to work at being credible in self-defense and speak respectfully to others as you’d like them to speak to you.
If you swish and throw your body around and pout, nobody expects you to do any of the above. It takes no effort to be swishy, but a lot of effort for those not genetically gifted to be credible “men.”
Another aspect is fashion. Looking like John Wayne or Charlton Heston is old fashioned. The in-look is Macaulay Calukin or the guy who played the male lead in Titanic. Neither one is worth looking up for proper names; you know who I mean. The in-look is established by fashion magazines and Hollywood. I think you can assume which side of the fence they drop on when it comes to appearing manly.
Check out the work by Belsky Steinburg and Draper on early rearing. Basically they found that stressful early rearing in the first few years of life produces a child which will tends towards disloyalty, promiscuity, early puberty, and antisocial psychologies, prone to denigrate masculinity. Their theory is we have an imbued behavioral program. When we are stressed as children, our body will mature faster, in an attempt to breed quickly, before dying early. Those who grow up absent such stress will mature slower, and more completely. They are programmed to take time to mature, and compete with each other in honor-based competition, prior to reproducing. The question is to reproduce quickly and desperately, with only the goal of getting your own genes to the next generation, or take time to compete, and then allow the best to carry the population forward, with the goal of making the species great.
All the above said, manliness isn’t a matter of size or aggression. It’s a matter of how they see the world, themselves and others. We’re tool users. But more than that, we’re intelligent. We plan. We construct. We prepare. We make alliances to make up for what we lack in other areas.
