If the ACC were to expand
Let's assume #15 is Cincinnati. Who is #16?

Q: which direction should the ACC look for more teams?

Northeast (BosWash)

or

Gulf Coast

?

I'm leaning toward Houston & Tulane, but if the league took more I could also see scenarios for UCF, SMU, Temple and [maybe] UConn.

What do YOU guys think?

UConn

Mark you left Cincy off. They would be 1b to UConn as 1a IMHO.

Ah, excellent point. AGREED, Cincinnati might be #1 overall.

You left off ND and Texas. The poll is invalid.

The only ACC worthy team on that list is UConn and football is still 80% of TV revenues, so I don't really consider them an option.

Of the schools on that list take the best program available, regardless of football issues. The conference has prided itself as a premier all-sports conference, so UConn fits right in. Cincinnati can work as well.

Texas AD DeLoss Dodds told me two years ago ACC was saving last two spots for UT, Notre Dame.

Ha ha! (but No)

Marshall has a better shot making it into the ACC (none at all) than about half of the schools you mentioned.

Troy?? FIU??

I think only three (3) schools make sense for the ACC and they are West Virginia, Cincinnati and Connecticut. I know PSU and Notre Dame would be best but they are highly unlikely! 07-coffee3

RE: If the ACC were to expand
None of the above.

If there were a team in the MD/DC/NJ, they would be option 1. Unless Georgetown suddenly becomes relevant in football there are no options for that area.

Army and Navy are only valid as a pair. That is a lot of baggage for a single game. A game they would not be willing to give up their rights to.

Texas would be the next market but none of the teams on that list deliver that market.

UConn makes the most sense, but I think Temple would be right behind them. Not very good football, but Philadelphia market combined with good basketball they would get a pretty look.

Definitely UConn given those options to go with Cincinnati.

Pod: UConn, Syracuse, Boston College, Pittsburgh

Pod: Virginia, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Louisville

Pod: North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest, Duke

Pod: Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami (FL)

Notre Dame plays one school from each pod+ rotatating opponent.

04-cheers

If you did that and ND remained indy on the FB side...I would suggest the ACC invite either Georgetown, Villanova or St. Johns to go to a 16/18 configuration. 9 league games and ND rotates through

Always play your 3 POD teamates, play all 4 in another rotating POD and two more teams in another POD

In hoops you might have to suck it up and go to 20 league games.

I don't think a non-football school would be necessary. With 17 you play each team once+ 2 protected rivals. That way UNC-Duke, UC-UofL, Pitt-Syracuse, etc are all protected.

BC, FSU, Clemson, NC State, and VT are not going to vote to add UConn, nor Temple. The schools that pay their bills with football don't want to add UConn and BC will never vote to add UConn over existential territorial issues.

Any new money, has to come from outside the current media footprint the ACC media footprint already covers over Connecticut, and DC, and parts of West Va.

Penn State, Florida, and Georgia are the only three schools in the media footprint that could add money for the existing schools. South Carolina, West Va., Kentucky, Indiana, Northwestern, or Purdue may or may not add value above and beyond for the other ACC schools.

This is similar to what I posted in the other parallel/duplicate thread, however, I switched West Virginia in for UConn (who I prefer in the B1G) and have the southern schools a bit different to keep current division rivals together.

My post from the other thread of the same title...

Cincinnati first, and then when the B12 falls apart West Virginia is next for a 16 (+1) ACC.

Metro - Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Virginia Tech
Atlantic - Boston College, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia
Coastal - Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina
Gulf - Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina State, Wake Forest

(+1) Notre Dame

RE: If the ACC were to expand
If I were the ACC, I think I'd be trying to make the same deal with Texas that they've made with Notre Dame....all sports but football. Let Texas football be independent like Notre Dame

then you'd have 14 for football, and 16 for basketball. You'd also have two of the most powerful schools in the ACC's corner. Plus, Texas having bigger name football programs, ie FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami, showing on the Longhorn network, I think that would be a plus for them (assuming a partial ACC schedule similar to ND)

If Texas is unavailable and Notre Dame absolutely refuses to join...it would be interesting to see what Houston and Tulane brought...

I really like UConn, but 1) the ACC has that region covered, 2) I'd respect BC's wishes as a conference member
