Exclamation Sell me on the "Apes" series
Saw:

Planet of the Apes / original
--thought it was decent

Planet of the Apes / 2001
--Liked it, but didn't get the big deal on it

Rise of the Planet of the Apes /2011
--I really liked it.

My order of watching these was :

2001 movie, 2011 movie, then watching original on Net Flix.

I've seen the set of the original 5 on sale on BR for $20. Sell me that the original series is worth buying/watching.

The latest film in that series, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", looks like it will be a good one too. I'm actually looking forward to seeing it.

The budgets of the original series kept getting smaller and smaller, and it shows. I enjoy the films but the first is best in the original series.

The first one w/ Charles Heston was absolutely amazing. If you like the current ones then you're going to love the original. The 2nd one was solid, then it got stupid w/ the later films like featuring the human species that stayed underground.

Yeah, I am mainly asking about 2-5 in the original series.

Waste of time and money. As a kid I thought they were pretty lame. I can't imagine getting through any of them, except possibly #2, as an adult. I'll echo Panther's point about budget. Saw a documentary that mentioned this and it's really obvious. By the 3rd movie they were only putting full makeup on the main characters. Everybody else just wears what amount to Halloween masks. Really pathetic.

Who could forget Nova. Now that is old school beauty right there and reason enough to watch the first two.

RE: Sell me on the "Apes" series
Ok, I ended up getting that BR box set for the "original 5."

I have watched 1-3 fully and half way done with 4 so far.

I have liked the first three enough. One thing that kind of bugged me about 2 was the way suggested yet open ended talking human civilization and their parameters. One thing that irked me about 3 was the main villain being all about alternate futures but wanted to kill the apes when their own version of the future would have happened whether they lived or died at that point. I haven't seen enough of 4 yet to comment.

****************

Also, saw the new movie today. Pretty good IMO. I will say that it appears they are borrowing from 3 and 4 and 5?) for their stories which might be a better way to tie stuff together if they get around to some of the stuff from 1 and 2 from the original set.

RE: Sell me on the "Apes" series
Finished the final Apes movie from the original series. Not bad, but budget and a better developed overall plot could have made it better. Kind of a good way to "end it."

I am really thinking that the two new Apes movies have borrowed a lot from 3,4 and 5 from the original set. I don't mind it as much but it is a interesting starting versus ending point as well as what got chosen.

I got to say that the remastering for the PotA Legacy BR box set is quite impressive for 40+ year old movies.

Interesting thoughts.... about the current cinematic offerings and their own tale of the Apes versus what was covered in the "Original 5."

I would find the back story of Caesar and how be became the seminal leader of the "Apes" and how he inspired the culture, religion, and scientific understanding of the Apes at the point of the original movie. Also, how the humans were in their own situation in the originals.

RE: Sell me on the "Apes" series
There is also an old TV show and an old cartoon series, both from the 1970s. The cartoon show had the apes way more technologically advanced than the movies (drove cars, lived in cities, etc), while the TV show had a different set of astronauts crash landing. The apes were still in charge, but the humans were still talking, and had a culture to speak of. They were just considered inferior.
