2014 Season Best-case Scenario
We've lived the worst-case scenario in recent years, so here's a look at the other end of the spectrum.

The best-case scenario is for the ACC would be:

Boston College upsets the Trojans - DONE
Clemson beats Georgia and S Carolina and gets the #4 playoff spot
Duke sweeps its OOC games
Florida State wins another national championship
Georgia Tech beats Georgia.
Louisville finishes in the middle of the ACC but wins its last two games
Miami gets back to being Miami, whips Nebraska
UNC doesn't lay an egg at ECU
NC State runs the table OOC
Pittsburgh beats Iowa
Syracuse beats Maryland
Virginia somehow upsets UCLA (I know)
Virginia Tech steals a win at Ohio State - DONE
Wake Forest sweeps OOC

Do all those things and I'll declare ACC football is where it needs to be.
Thoughts?

RE: 2014 Season Best-case Scenario
I agree with most but for Pitt, it's not about beating Iowa or another P5 team. Pitt has beaten teams of the caliber of Iowa almost every year. It's about not losing the games they should win like Navy last year or several others like that over the last 5-10 years.

Fair enough. If Pitt beats Iowa, of course I expect them to sweep the other 3 non-conference foes as well.

Best-case scenario for the ACC... not necessarily best for Louisville!

The league needs FSU, Clemson, Miami and Va Tech to all finish as high as possible, IMO. Now, I suppose if U of L went undefeated, that would be ok, too... but VERY unexpected.

Pitt just needs to go undefeated OOC for once. Since joining a conference in 1991 Pitt has lost at least one OOC game every year

RE: 2014 Season Best-case Scenario
Quote:Clemson's schedule is intriguing, but its playoff chances likely come down to three games: the season opener at Georgia, the Sept. 20 game at Florida State and the season-ending game against South Carolina. If Clemson finishes 11-1, it could realistically be in the playoff discussion regardless of whether it wins its own division.

It would certainly need help if it doesn't win its division, but this team would still be in the conversation.

Getting two teams from the same conference in the playoff could be hard. Getting two teams from the ACC into the playoff would blindside just about everyone.

"Where it needs to be"? You should be happy if just 50% of that happens.

Not really. It's definitely better if certain teams win ACC games.

You're setting yourself up for disappointment. All of the above are DEEPLY improbable.

Exactly!!05-mafia

If everyone wins their OOC game then the ACC is on top of the world!!! I will concede it's better for Florida St. to make the playoffs, but it's a STREET FIGHT for second place in the ACC.

RE: 2014 Season Best-case Scenario
The ACC has 17 OOC against P5 schools (including the 4 ND games).
Would love to win them all but realistically, if we win 10-13 of them that would be ideal.

The ACC has 9 OOC against high level G5 teams (2 Tulane, 2 ECU, SDST, BYU, Colorado St, Cincinnati, USF).
We need to win all of these. Very important for ACC reputation.

The ACC has to win the remaining 30 OOC games. Vitally important for ACC reputation.

If a team loses to either one of the "30 vitals" or one of the "9 very important" teams and also plays ND, they need to lose to ND.

The ACC needs 4 teams to be elite. Whoever they are.

See, I'd go one step further: If a team loses to either one of the "30 vitals" or one of the "9 very important" teams, they need to have a losing record within the ACC, too. Can't have a team lose to Tulane, BYU or USF, then turn around and beat an FSU or a Clemson!
