Obviously, I'm a total Cincinnati homer. But I just wanted to throw this out there: A lot of Big 12 fans are turning their noses up at the thought of these teams being invited to their conference. While I understand their concern, I think these schools can compete in the Big 12 given a few years to catch up (much like TCU).
Cincinnati has been a fairly successful program since 2000 -- 11 bowl appearances along with 2 BCS game appearances and 5 10+ win seasons in 14 years. But I think the real turning point was Brian Kelly's arrival, and specifically our appearance in the 2009 Orange Bowl. Since that game, Cincinnati has gone 7-7 against P5 teams. And that's not including games against our former Big East foes Louisville, WVU, Rutgers, Pitt, and Syracuse -- we are 13-8 against those teams during the same timeframe. Here is the rundown:
2009 (12-1, #8)
@ #24 Oregon State W 28-18
vs. Illinois W 49-36
vs. #3 Florida (Sugar Bowl) L 24-51
2010 (4-8)
@ NC State L 19-30
vs. #8 Oklahoma L 29-31
2011 (10-3, #25)
@ Tennessee L 23-45
vs. NC State W 44-14
vs. Vanderbilt (Liberty Bowl) W 31-24
2012 (10-3)
vs. Virginia Tech (played at FedExField Landover, MD) W 27-24
vs. Duke (Belk Bowl) W 48-34
2013 (9-4)
vs. Purdue W 42-7
@ Illinois L 17-45
vs. North Carolina (Belk Bowl) L 17-39
2014 (2-2)
@ #22 Ohio State L 28-50
My point is that I believe the AAC teams can compete in the Big 12 if given the opportunity. It might be a few years before any of the possible new additions compete for a league championship, but they aren't going to get the doors blown off them either. Cincy, ECU, UCF, and USF will build themselves up enough before the next TV deal is negotiated to help the conference.
Cincinnati has played the P5 tough with 3-star recruits and a modest athletic budget. The few times we've gotten to host big names like Oklahoma and WVU, we played the games at Paul Brown Stadium and drew 58K and 48K, respectively. Yes, some of these schools are "projects" but they would all gladly take a smaller share of the money pie and will be able to compete fairly quickly given the resources to do so.
Anyhow, that was me being a total homer and stating our case to be included in the Big 12.
