Lacrosse Magazine: 30 in 30: The B1G Time Comes to Lacrosse
http://www.laxmagazine.com/college_men/D...0_big_time

The article talks about how BTN is factoring into the emergence of the new lacrosse league:

Quote:The NCAA had football and basketball in mind when allowing greater latitude to these conferences with more resources, but the Big Ten is keeping lacrosse in mind too, thanks to its biggest asset: the Big Ten Network (BTN).

"Our goal is to become the top conference in both men's and women's lacrosse," said Wendy Fallon, Big Ten associate commissioner for championships and sport liaison for men's lacrosse. "How can we best showcase these student-athletes and their stories, and hopefully educate some fans who may be less familiar with the sport? A big part of that will be showing live lacrosse games on the Big Ten Network."

According to Fallon, the network and universities would like to broadcast lacrosse games in prime-time hours Thursday (women) and Sunday (men).

"We don't have all the details but we've been actively engaged with them," she said. "That puts our programs in a great position to get more exposure."

RE: Lacrosse Magazine: 30 in 30: The B1G Time Comes to Lacrosse
This shows that the Big 10 is playing chess while the other power conferences are playing checkers. By adding members strategically to ensure that the conference has sufficient membership in sports it wants to add as conference sports the conference has greatly expanded the available programming.

Most conferences have only a handful (at best) of sports to fill up 168 hours of programming every week. It's tough to create a conference sports network the SEC will soon learn that after the football season is over that all they have to talk about is a 2nd rate hoops product until baseball season begins. All the SEC has to offer is Football, Hoops, Track, Swimming & Baseball along with women's soccer.

The Big 12 has those sports plus wrestling.

The Big 10 has Football & Soccer from August thru November, Hockey from October through April, Basketball from November through April, Wrestling from November to March, Lacrosse & Baseball in the spring along with Track. Plenty of inventory and more than any other conference.

RE: Lacrosse Magazine: 30 in 30: The B1G Time Comes to Lacrosse
And based on every time i turn on BTN lately, the BTN has women's volleyball on in October.

No matter, I will be canceling cable the day HBO starts offering its streaming only service. I went without cable from 2009-2012 but never said i would not go back someday.

But this time it feels different. I have a feeling this time when I cut the cord it will be for good. Without HBO, my only reason to keep cable is to watch college football, but based on my own experience this year trying to watch Iowa games, it aint worth it. I feel like I am done and i am not even mad about it.

I enjoy watching women's volleyball, beats the heck out of women's hoops. Big 10 is also one of the strongest conferences nationally in the sport.

Sorry, I probably gave you the impression i dont like women's volleyball when i went on my rant about cable tv.

I actually like women's volleyball too. I especially like how it gets done in a reasonable amount of time.

I certainly enjoy the athletic component of volleyball, but those women are friggin HOT!!! FYI, I've never watched a men's volleyball game and have no interest in doing so. Just saying...

Women's Volleyball players have to be very athletic as the game requires them to be proficient in defense and offense

RE: Lacrosse Magazine: 30 in 30: The B1G Time Comes to Lacrosse
Article brings up the possibility of the JHU women joining the B1G in 2016.

http://www.laxmagazine.com/college_women...lying_solo

Quote:So what does the future hold for this fledgling crew with only a few seasoned veterans? There has certainly been some speculation for how long they will remain an independent and with their male counterparts zooming in on the Big Ten, is there any interest for the women as well?

Back in 2013 when the Big Ten officially announced men's and women's lacrosse as the conference's 27th and 28th sports during a press conference, commissioner James E. Delany said, regarding Hopkins women's lacrosse, "We'd be interested if they're interested."

It would make sense for the Johns Hopkins women to wind up in the Big Ten as an affiliate member. But that won't be until 2016 at the soonest. Considering the fact that the men's program has joined the Big Ten, how would Tucker feel? Would she be interested in something like that?

"I think the Big Ten is an awesome conference and I'd be really excited to have that opportunity," she said.

Having an odd number of teams would be difficult though not impossible I guess. Perhaps another Big Ten school is looking at adding Women's LAX though.

An odd number at 7 is less difficult than an odd number at 9 or 11 ... it makes for a seven week conference season with one bye per week, and many of the schools would have an opportunity to schedule OOC into the bye week if they wished.

That's certainly true. An odd number at 7 is considerably easier to deal with than at 9 or 11. OTOH I really don't see the LAX leagues getting bigger than 8 schools for the foreseeable future anyway.

The face of the guy (or gal?) in the chair on the left makes that picture even better imo.

B1G should add Women's Mud Wrestling. It will boost Big Ten Network ratings tremendously.

Dang, even if I get the Dish streaming ESPN/ESPN2 subscription, I don't see how I will be able to watch BTN in Beijing, and since the Spring semester runs from March to July, that means I will miss basically all of Lacrosse season.

Beach Volleyball. It's fast growing in popularity and already has a professional league in existence that has it's matches broadcast on cable sports.
