You do realize the he coaches Worth Gregory and the Punt unit too. Worth is averaging 46 yards a put. Punt return has been okay, teams this year have only had two or three long returns on KO, no TD's. He can't make the tackles himself.
We got beat deep too many times, that is where we lost this game, Allen was beat all night, Hawkins got beat 3 times, one for a TD. Missed two FGs, went for two twice when we didn't need to. Had we gone for 1 both times, we could have taken a knee and got to OT.
If you think our ST coverages over the last couple of years have been good?...then maybe you might need to reconsider who is stupid. We have been horrible on this phase of the game. It is undeniable.
Football has 3 phases....we are good at 1....decent at 1...and GOD AWFUL at the other one. Ruff needs to address this next year.
34 KO going into the night, zero Td's allowed, 23.94 average return, not great, but not what has cost us games. You haven't said anything about punt, punt return, PATs, FG, FG defense, all are part of special teams.
And to blame the lose on one KO is stupid, especially with the deep Td's given up. The 3rd and 8 that Allen was lost on the 4th down play for the TD, Hawkins getting beat for a 55 yard TD. Even after the KO that you said cost us the game we had a chance to get off the field and couldn't. On the drive before that, we had two chances to get off the field, one deep in Cinny's side that would have lead to punt, the other a 4th down, down jump offsides and don't get beat on the fly route, it's our ball. We allowed too many deep passes, that's where lost, period.
Sorry if I lead you to believe I blamed the game on one KO return with my comments.. I don't hold that belief. We do however need to address our ST play in order to become a better team. That is undeniable. It is Ruffs job to address this issue. I hope we can improve.
I have no idea how we won that game. I went into it thinking we would lose for sure. Our defense was actually decent considering all the turnovers in our own territory. Justin Hardy is a stud, kid catches everything.

You won with Keil vs D. Allen. I'll double check, but Inthink Keil had over 250 yards if not more against him and 3 TD's. Hawkins, and the safteies do fine, Hawkins got bet a few times, once for a TD. But, I can understand that with Keil and UC's WRs. But, D. Allen, it's the same thing every game, can't cover. Our DC Rick has talked about this and will be glad when he can get his guys in over the next few years. He's got the front 7 doing well and Hawkins is doing good, Ivey is fairing better than I thought he would. Allen, man, I like him, he a great kid, works hard, but he just isn't getting it done on the field.
I was there but I kept thinking I was watching a video game. Two powerful offenses going at each other all night makes for an exciting game. What an amazing FG by Gantz!

Most of the games in the series have been down the wire wars, that's why I was looking forward to renewing it.
Feeling is mutual. That was a great start to the series. It definitely seems like this series will have serious AAC implications most years.
I don't really agree with those questioning CTT in this thread. It was risky to go for it, but we just scored a TD by going for it that nobody complained about and you had to trust the O a heck of a lot more than the D at that point. Even if it was too risky in that spot on the field, I think there is something to be said by playing aggressively and not taking your foot off the gas. I thought Gran had a good game calling plays. The game was mostly close because A. ECU's passing game is really good and B. ECU did a way better job of catching INT opportunities than us. We otherwise played very well.
Regardless, the win gets our season mostly back on track so I'm not worried about the details.
What the hell was Tommy thinking on that 4th down call? Does he want to keep his job? Good job Bearcats. ECU is all Carden and Hardy, and that's pretty much it.

On going for it on fourth down in UC territory late in the game:
“If I knew we were going to run that play like that, I promise you I would have punted it. We called a timeout. We were in the formation where the quarterback kicks the ball, like we did all last year. That gave us a better roll. I looked and it said there’s 2:17 on the clock and we get four yards and this thing is over with. They lined up perfectly but (ECU’s Montese Overton) number 51 might be one of the best players in the conference. He’ll make all-conference and even all-American team linebacker. He took both; he took the quarterback and the pitch which you normally don’t see. Gunner kind of panicked a little bit and decided to keep it and we didn’t get the first down. It is what it is. I put our guys in a bind and I told them they dug me out of a hole. So I don’t have to listen all the next couple weeks about how stupid that call was. It was a stupid call. But I just saw our defense give up a touchdown in one minute and we were on our heels. Not that I didn’t have confidence in them, I just had more confidence in our offense on making that first down. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it but our players were able to dig us out.”
