Panel discussion at Wake Forest addresses whether football should be banned
I wonder if they are discussing it in terms of whether Wake Forest should drop the sport or if it should be banned entirely.

Wake has a place in the ACC - even if they should drop football and just play the other sports... but I don't that happens any time soon.

The debate is hosted by the law school and all of the panelists are lawyers. It seems like they will be debating liability and other legal issues.

I'm not so sure about Wake remaining in the ACC if they were to drop football. Some members might like to see that spot go to a full member. Wake currently only participates in ~2/3 of the sports that the ACC sponsors.

RE: Panel discussion at Wake Forest addresses whether football should be banned
I think it's hard for sports fans to accept the reality that the discussion will not be about WFU dropping football. It's about the game of football as we know it being banned because of the horrendous brain injury problems that seem to be an inevitable part of the game. This is a reasonable discussion. Yes, I know how entrenched football is in American culture but would you want your son playing football? Are you sure? What happens if school district after school district starts banning football? The sport starts to die from the bottom up. I can't say this will definitely happen but I don't think one can say it can't happen.

If Wake drops FB I'd rather add Tennessee -- assuming the ACC is run competently and presses home its massive TV market advantage.

Yea, it's a helluvan assumption.

Nah, the ACC will give us Villanova in a soccer stadium on steroids. 05-stirthepot

That would be awful. High school boys would have to find some other ways to get laid. I don't remember girls being so willing to give it up for baseball players. The point here is that high school boys are always going to engage in physically risky activities whether they are formally sanctioned or not.

It'll never happen... they aren't dropping football.

But I know of this school just up the river from Louisville and down river from Pittsburgh a couple hundred miles that would love to play all sports in the ACC if that were to happen. 04-cheers

:)

The meeting wasn't about Wake dropping football.

Hallcity is correct. It was a law school panel discussion about banning the sport nationwide.

Yeah, I was waiting on the resident Wake fan to drop by and add some clarity to this discussion. Thanks WFR!!

Football, when taught fundamentally, is a good sport to play. Many of us, including me, played at some level in their youths and the game today resembles nothing like we were taught with respect to tackling.

Banning the sport nationwide is a crazy discussion, unless the discussion involves a replacement sport.

I wish it was about wake dropping the sport. And even though it's not, I wish we would drop wake from the conference.

WF would not be kicked out of the league if they dropped football. UNC, NCSU, Duke, UVa, and VT would not vote for that.

Why aim so low? Add Penn State, Ohio State or both!

You're a clown, boy.

What kind of bandwagon do the alumni ride on?

Nevermind that. Wake brings no value to the conference, and I'm not the only one on here to say that. It's cute that your tobacco road buddies defend wake, but that doesn't change reality.

Like I said, this has been discussed before (i.e., old news).

A basketball-only share would be 20% of $20M = $4M/year, with no costs associated with football. That's better than being in the Big East. Just saying.

(I still don't think the Deacs would ever do that).

It'd be nice if you could buy Wake out. Give them enough to join the Big East and get a school outside of NC to replace them.
