16 team playoff
Forget 8, let's just go to 16.

Two PhD students have started a blog outlining how and why a move to 16 teams in the right move for college football.

8 is ideal, it should stop at 8. That gives 5 power conference champs and 3 slots for indy teams, good runners ups, and/or a good g5 team.

Agreed. 16 would weaken the importance of the regular season, right at the moment in time when college football attendance is supposedly shrinking.

Cheers,
Neil

No to 16.
Border-line "No" to 8

I've said it for 7 years -- there's nothing preventing the schools in the G5 conferences from creating their own playoff. Do that. Make it 16 if you like. Have at it.

Except of course the whole 'nobody would pay for it' angle. 04-cheers

RE: 16 team playoff
I will say this much, 16 teams would be a lot better than four teams, which is a lot better than the two team system it replaced. Still, I think eight teams would be the sweet spot. That is at least where I would like to start.

Four teams is simply insufficient. The math just doesn't work. This year the powers that be avoided having the SEC gobble up two teams and they still ran into controversy. Imagine if the Big Ten and the XII had been left out. All hell would've broken loose. This is a very obviously flawed system and it needs to be fixed ASAP.

I really like the solution that is the most simple and most commonly suggested: automatic bids to the champions of the P5 conferences, with three at-large berths going to some combination of the highest ranked non-champs of P5 schools/the highest ranked G5 team/Notre Dame/etc. that would be a way better system than what is currently in place.

8 is the magic number and then stop. The six autos are the P5 champs and the highest rated G5 champ and then two at large.

Go to 64, drop the regular season to 8 conference games and let the tourney be the OCC portion of the schedule. The tourney losers and teams that didn't make can play each other or FCS if they want to get to 12 games.

I could live with 8, but 16 includes most good teams. I want 16. 07-coffee3

Re: 16 team playoff
I used to favor 6-8 team playoff but after seeing it this season I like 4. It shouldnt be easy to make it & the season was exciting all the way to the very last game. There were only 3 teams truely deserving this year, 4-8 just didnt have a strong enough case. I would be fine with 6-8 but nothing more than that.

I prefer 11. The P5 champs, the MWC and AAC champs, with the C-USA, SBC, and MAC champs plus the highest ranked independent playing off for the last spot in the quarterfinals. Take the selection process out of the hands of a committee.

Yeah, but .... no.

The Power 5 should stage their 8 team playoff, and the G5 schools can stage their own 8 (or 16!) team playoff.

What would be the point of a G5 playoff? And who would watch it, even if they could come up with a plausible reason for having one?

I agree completely about the excitement. I was very interested in the games in all 5 major conferences and I wouldn't have been if there were automatic bids or essentially ones. Who gets in at #8 isn't nearly as big a deal as #4 and if the Big Ten champ is in regardless, why should I care about the rest.

As far as deserving, I've always been of the opinion if you lose, you lose the right to complain. Maybe things will work out for you to get another chance, maybe they won't, but what makes the whole season exciting is knowing you need to win them all or you need to watch for others to lose to get in/have your conference get a team in.

Playoffs are where the money is. There may be a step or two in between but 16 is coming.

Dropping to 8 regular season games isn't going to happen. Schools want/need 7 home games to pay the bills.

YES.

4 is way too few, 8 is still too few.

16 is NECESSARY. I've yet to hear a good reason why not.

There are plenty of good reasons why not to me.

Devalues the regular season, devalues the Conference Championship games, post-season would likely extend beyond the 2nd week of January.

I'm glad we finally got to 4 (which I think is ideal), but also would be okay with 8.

16 is far too many for basically 65 - 70 programs.

Cheers,
Neil

Agreed & who wants a champ with 2-3 loses?! Also with that many you are bound to have rematches. That was a main argument against Bama & LSU a few years ago, they already played but now finished 1-1 against each other which diminished the first meeting. With that many teams everyone would be able to schedule OOC like Baylor did this year as well. One reason Ohio St got in over Baylor is OOC SOS, I love that message.
