Richmond football, Rocco's dilemma, Liberty, let's bring it on.....
I've had a thought festering since LU played Richmond in football. There was lots of love and well wishes for Rocco. Yes, I know it was emotional coming back and he did bring the program back from the Karcher debacle. Thanks coach Rocco for what you did for LU.

What has been grating on me is his desire not to play LU anymore? There was lots of coach speak in his pre and post game interviews. Well, why are you coach Rocco not willing or wanting to play the Flames anymore? The emotional aspect of coming back "home". That is a wimp position.

Richmond and JMU, could be longtime rivals for the Flames now, and as the Flames march towards FBS. Even as FBS, LU and Richmond could continue to play. The perception is now that JMU would be wiling to play LU. But not Richmond.

There are many practical reasons LU and Richomd could play. There are less that they should not. The emotional reason that Rocco stated is weak and wimpy. To not play LU for an emotional tie to the school grates on me. Man up coach!

I am thankful for Rocco and his time spent here at Liberty. I wish him well in his future endeavors as long as they don't conflict with Liberty's.

That said, I get it. I understand why he doesn't want to coach against Liberty. We are a lose-lose school to go up against. We are good enough to possibly beat you but not good enough to get respect from winning. And Richmond and JMU are higher on the ladder of FCS programs than Liberty so they have way more to lose in perception from losing and not much to gain from a win. Liberty wants to go FBS and Richmond doesn't. Liberty and Richmond would not schedule each other if it weren't for being so close and I think the same could be said about JMU as well. They just aren't peers to us and they don't see us as equals to them.

For what it's worth, Richmond has been mentioned as a potential FBS member on various school boards. I also remember someone in their admin, possibly the AD, stating they would be an attractive member for FBS. I believe JMU is comfortable with LU's overt intent to move up and LU has gained their respect with a) LU's playoff win and b) the number that traveled to JMU for the playoff game. With the rumblings after the JMU/LU game, the better team won on that particular game, and many JMU fans publicly stated that. My hats off to them and I changed by attitude towards JMU and their program, about how they handled the game, and mostly how they acted after it was over. Classy and first class. Plus they have great facilities.

Richmond has beaten us the last two times we've played. Close games, but they won. One can perceive Richmond does not respect LU, but the opposite is likely true. That being said, they perceive the might and momentum that LU has. Years of frustration and close calls, mostly going against the Flames, have changed. Richmond surely feels very lucky to have won in Lynchburg this year. Their position likely is they want no part of LU. That LU is on an upward surge, to excel in FCS, like Richmond, and well beyond Richmond.

I believe Richmond only wants to avoid LU. They appear sort of like Nova in football. Nova is comfortable in building a new stadium that seats 11,000. As that will be an upgrade over their existing facility, that is setting a low expectation. That being that FCS is their goal and they'll make the best of it at that level. That is fine if that is their goal, but that is not LU's goal. Richmond aligns itself more with Nova here than LU, and that's why they'll play others before they will play LU. Prove me wrong coach Rocco and the Richmond AD. Schedule us, unless it is too emotional for you!
