We here in the Republic of Cincinnati, sequestered as we are in the far southwest corner of what the rest of Ohio considers Ohio, don't care much about The Ohio State University, sports-wise. Never have.

We have UC and X and even UK. The fact that OSU is barely 100 miles up 71 doesn't make much difference. We're a republic of immigrants, a melting pot of Bearcats, Musketeers, Wildcats and stuff. We don't close our republic's borders to Buckeyes. We just make it hard for them to become citizens.

How come?

My son went to Ohio State. I thought he got a terrific education for the price. By the time he was a second-semester junior or so, his class sizes were less than 20. He developed personal relationships with his professors, to the extent that a few wrote nice letters that helped him get into grad school.

It's a huge campus, but retains a collegial feel. Kelly said there's nothing like going to a football game there. He still says the atmosphere at Ohio Stadium is far better than what he's encountered at PBS and – sigh – Heinz Field. He's a Stillers fan, an accident of genetics on his mother's side.

Anyway, we have this thing against our own state university. I've been here 26 years, and never figured it out. Perhaps youse can help me.

I can guess some of your reasons: (1) The big bro-little bro complex. OSU won't play UC in basketball, didn't play the Bearcats in football for many years, especially during a time when UC was a legit threat;

(2) The whole THE thing. Reeks of arrogance. Unnecessary for a school of Ohio State's size and stature.

(3) We here in the Republic somehow think we're a cut above the rest of the state. Admit it, we do. A general reluctance to embrace the future is emboldened by our belief that we're good as we are, and if you don't like us, there's something wrong with you.

We don't proclaim that outwardly. Just the opposite. But our insular nature makes itself clear enough. If you're one of us, you can't be one of them. I was here 20 years before I felt like a local.

(And, yes, the local media, Enquirer included, has all but ignored Ohio State forever.)

Geography doesn't help. Ours is more interesting and beautiful than much of the rest of the state. Nor does culture. We are closer as the crow flies to Louisville than Cleveland, and have far more in common. I've had a hard time calling Cincinnati Midwestern; it's closer to Southern. Cleveland is Eastern. Columbus – flat and Big 10, with corn fields barely 10 miles outside its borders – is Midwestern.

Pro teams don't help, though Cleveland has one more than we do, and is Buckeye Central, outside of C-bus.

I'm going to write this for Sunday, the day before OSU plays Oregon for the championship of the quasi-am football universe. I don't know how many OSU alums live around here, but I'll find out.

I wanna know from you why the indifference (at best) for our state school. I had a good friend once threaten to cancel his Enquirer subscription because one Sunday in the fall, we ran an Ohio State football story on Page 1 of Sports, and put the Bearcats on Page 4. OSU had played someone big; UC had played someone little.

Tell me why this is.

O$U played someone big--like Indiana or Purdue or Northwestern or Rutgers (yeah, right). UC played someone "little"--like WVU, Pitt or Louisville. UC draws +/- 30,000 people to Nippert, on average, from a county of 800,000 people and a Metro area of about 1.6 million. O$U draws 105,000 in a State of almost 11,000,000. I could go on PDoc wouldn't understand anyway. Maybe he should move to Columbus. Don't think he would be missed much in Cincy.

Doc's Morning Line: Ohio State fans, haters weigh in
The Morning Line
Paul Daugherty, pdaugherty@enquirer.com 10:56 a.m. EST January 8, 2015

Forty-one days until pitchers and catchers. It's 3-below this AM. Just sayin'. . .

Well, now. Sure did open a six-pack of wormswith that little question yesterday, didn't we?

The best opinion-writing elicits equal devotion from both sides of the wall. That one qualified. I had as many people tell me how right my suspicions were as how wrong.

Actually, many more of youse agreed with what I suspected: There is an indifference here to TOSU that exists nowhere else in the state. Those that didn't buy that made very good points, most of which began with, "Maybe you haven't seen all the Buckeye fans at (pick your sports bar).''

Fair enough.

A few of the better responses I got yesterday, via e-mail:

"We may both be in Ohio. But I already have a University. It's called the University of Cincinnati and it needs our help and support as much as we need it. No room for OSU. OSU is the "giant" to our "David", a bully, and every bad guy you ever hated in 80s movies (I prefer Ted Knight's Judge Smails in Caddyshack).

"UC plays X every year in basketball. Some years (Hell some decades) UC was the toughest team on the XU schedule. Those games allowed X to make a name for itself.

"What has OSU done for UC? Does it play UC in basketball every year? No! Avoids UC like the plague.

"I hope the Luckeyes lose and lose bad. I'm pissed they even got this far!''

And. . .

The "The" in OSU Buckeyes says it all doesn't it? When OSU comes to Cincy and plays us when it doesn't just suit their needs, they gain respect. Until then, Go Ducks!. Seems I'm right as ESPN 1530 poll today says 34% of Cincinnatians are cheering for Oregon.

And. . .

Have you not noticed that Ohio has 13 or so public, state universities? (OSU) is the largest. So? It is NOT "our state university." Taxpayers support all the state universities. And certainly, please, OSU is NOT "THE" Ohio State University. That is really a grammatical error that truly bothers many of us at other institutions in Ohio.

Actually, someone else wrote to say that the THE in the name is longstanding, and has nothing to do with arrogance. Actually, more than a few someones wrote to say that.

Personally, I have no issue with OSU. I wanted them to beat the Sabans. I root against every SEC team, out of habit. Apparently, other leagues now have speed, too.

And I want a team from our state to win it all, against a team from another state, so I'll be cheering for the Buckeyes Monday night.

Regardless, thanks for the mass participation yesterday. Fun and educational.

I think I've mentioned this on here before. The "The" thing, as Doc calls it, annoys me, but it's smart. Ohio State has always had that in their name, but did not start to really use it until the 90s. It pisses some people off, but it's brilliant marketing and name recognition. NFL players use it constantly, and it always has people talking. Free publicity for the university.
