HVAC company recommendation needed
I know we have discussed this before, but I need a recommendation for a company to replace my outdoor HVAC unit and totally replace my crawl space air ducting. I would also like a complete cleaning of the crawl space. This is a 1940 house.

Any suggestions as to the best HVAC unit to buy would also be appreciated.

Thanks, guys, and gals!

RE: HVAC company recommendation needed
I like Choates. When you buy expensive HVAC equipment and install duct work, you really need to buy from a reputable company that has been around for a long time. You want to make sure that duct work is properly installed and that your service warranty actually means something. I replaced my outdoor unit with a Trane and have been pleased. Carrier is also good. The advantage to Carrier is they use universal parts. Trane does not and can be more expensive to repair and harder to find parts.

Once you get a nice system (and the warranty expires) you can easily find cheaper companies to repair and patch. You just don't want to screw up the installation, or the system will be worthless from the get go.

I highly doubt any good HVAC company will clean your crawl space. You will need to hire a handyman type who wants to do that or contact a company like ServiceMaster.

I can tell you one not to use. Unfortunutely, because I'm able to do that I am unable to recommend a good one.

I like Chickasaw - we are under contract with them and they do maintenance on both of our units 2x per year.

I know at least a dozen folks who use Conway with great satisfaction as well.

I used Kelley Mechanical to replace an entire unit late this Summer, I was quite pleased with them. Nice, reasonable. FWIW, I had a bad experience with Conway Services.

I have used Hiller on my house as well as my rentals and they are very fair and responsive. I also have had a bad experience with Conway, but that doesn't mean they are not a good company, they just dropped the ball with me.

Wasn't Conway bought out by a national company a few years ago? Pretty sure it was, and Conway is just a figurehead/spokesman now. Anybody know for sure?

Yes, they were bought out. I would never use Conway before or after they were bought out. I know several really good ones but they do mostly commercial work.

Conway was a complete joke when they came to my home for an HVAC quote. When they tried to tell me one type of filter was better than another because it could filter SALT better than another . . . I had to explain that HVAC filters are not made to filter something as dense as salt. They didn't get it.

Choates is too expensive. Charged much more for a mitsubishi ductless heat pump installation. Called tried and true B&W Air. Ask for MLGW EcoBuild system. Not much more for high SEER system with hard duct and mastik sealed joints. I have a sealed and insulated crawlspace. That's what you should do to keep mold out. Attic Insulation will spray cellulose around the crawlspace walls and put 6mil plastic on the floor.

Oh, and I would highly recommend having Rye Consultants in Arkansas do a HVAC load calc on your house to determine the proper sizing for your new HVAC unit. No need to pay more for a larger unit if you don't need to.

I felt like I needed a shower after the Conway sales guys left my house. Could not have been more stereotypically sale-y.

Used to work for a HVAC distributor. Conway was far and away the most crooked that we dealt with.

I had to have the outside A/C unit replaced awhile back. They have changed out the Freon so you can't replace just the outside unit. You have to replace the whole system. It turns out that you can buy a new unit with the old Freon in it. It just can't ship from the factory with Freon in it. Of all the people that looked at it only one guy told me about this. So I got a new outside unit at 1/3 of the price of replacing the whole system. Guys name that I used was Danny (828-9197). Really nice guy, works out of his house. He doesn't have a lot of overhead so he's a good bit cheaper but it honest and does good work.
