What Sports Should Liberty Add?
If you can add sports to the LU athletic department, what would they be?

For me, I'd say...

Men's Lacrosse
Men's and Women's Rifle
Women's Rowing
Men's Ice Hockey
Men's Swimming and Diving

But then I'd have to come up with some other women's sports to meet standards.

Hockey for sure. Liberty has a tradition of playing hockey and bring pretty good, although it's a club sport.

A real D1 Men's BB team would be my first add.

I would say men's hockey and men's lacrosse and appropriate women's sports to balance the scholarships.

Great for the Flames!

What is the talent difference between the hockey we play and the NCAA teams?

RE: What Sports Should Liberty Add?
As a casual fan of ice hockey, I've always enjoyed games at LU. The students get pumped and the playing atmosphere is intimate. Most games seem to be sellouts and fan interest is strong. From the outside looking in it appears ice hockey, if developed and promoted could be a very popular sport at LU. Admins wiser than I about hockey will know if it's feasible to develop beyond club status. I'll keep an eye on the game tonight against #3 Minot while channel surfing other games on tap. It just seems like an opportunity to develop a sport that could bring some high visibility to LU.

RE: What Sports Should Liberty Add?
I'm not a fan of hockey but I have enjoyed all the games (10 or so) that I attended at Liberty and the few I have been to elsewhere. From what I understand, the league Liberty is in (ACH?) isn't much worse than the Division I, it just isn't sponsored by the NCAA from my limited knowledge. I remember big schools that Liberty played (Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Penn State who has since gone Division I so they may be a good team to look at to see how they compare from pre- and post-move).

As for exposure, I don't know how much exposure Liberty can get from hockey. I think the NHL is struggling with viewers and the national following of college hockey is strictly regional. It's been a while since I've watched SportsCenter but I don't remember them showing highlights of college hockey except a 15 second clip of the NCAA national championship match between a northeastern school and a Great Lakes school. I don't think we should ignore the potential of hockey but the returns aren't very good compared to many other sports, especially since it isn't Division I. Liberty could increase its midwest and northeast presence but I think they are concentrating on the south and southwest at the moment due to the online program.

If hockey was feasible to develop, it likely would be more of a status sport that LU offers like the large, high profile schools do. Tis true that professional hockey has a very small following as reflected in the lack of TV coverage and audience. As an on campus sports, and watching online, it has a good following and is unique for a VA school to have as it's distinctive for LU to have the snow flex. That's out-of-the-box thinking that helps to develop a brand beyond local recognition.

The article from the link shows Liberty as an independent in the ACHA league. If LU were to pursue D1 NCAA can they join as an indendent?

#11 LU beats #3 Minot twice
Streamed much of the LU hockey game last night. LU won both games on Friday and Saturday night. Very exciting and jammed packed arena. Nice to see the enthusiasm whether LU hockey remains a club sport or moves to NCAA. It nice to see great attendance at the hockey game help offset the MBB downfall.
