I don't know much about Lutz except for what Wikipedia says and I would be excited to have him. It sure sounds like he got a raw deal at Charlotte. Allison would be a great assistant and coach-in-waiting.

NC State has a very nice bio about him. He's basically been a winner everywhere he has been. Seems to have lots of pluses. This is a name to be excited about and follow.

I like that Lutz is a localish (North Carolina) guy. He should know the area well and recruit as good as any at our level. I hope the game hasn't passed him by for being out of head coaching for so long but maybe he has had time to refocus and get his head coaching career back on track. If we can have the same success in the Big South that he achieved with Charlotte then we'll be FBS in no time.

I will say this, I hope you choose someone other than Lutz for selfish reasons. If Liberty get Coach Lutz, I think you will have made an excellent hire. I was amazed we were able to get him on our staff and that UNC-Charlotte ever fired him. He is a good man and excellent coach! I know NC State fans will be rooting for him to be successful when he goes back to Head Coaching.

Does anyone know why Meyer left LU in the first place? I don't think I'd want him as a head coach again. He hasn't been a head coach in a while.

Meyer's tenure had ran its course. A few things happened that tainted alot of peoples view of Meyer. I'm not going to go into detail, but a couple things happened during a trip to Hawaii that caused Meyer some trouble. His teams were competitive and he was a good recruiter. I thought he was a solid x's and o's coach. Personally, I would welcome him back. Lutz would be my 1st choice, but Meyer is a solid coach.

RE: Liberty basketball coach fired, replacement du jour
"Basketball hire critical for Liberty athletics", headline of Chris Lang of the N&A

In likely N&A Chris Lang's strongest comment so far on Liberty basketball, he summarizes the tenure of former coach Layer and the awkward contract renewal, the fate and pressure on college coaches, and the tedious position AD Barber is in selecting the right coach to be the resurrecting hire. He concludes the article stating, ".....another miss on a head basketball coach would undoubtedly be a black mark on Barber’s tenure."

I have at times thought Lang has been soft on the recent basketball status at LU. This time he is poignant, clear and concise on the present position LU is in and the high demand Barber has to get it right. Lang states the importance the basketball hire has and the relation to Liberty's FBS quest, a point that has been well written about and discussed on this board. The link:

That's a good article by Chris. I agree with it all. The recent NCAA tournament run was bittersweet for me as I was not a fan of Layer and was mad that he would get an extension by winning the Big South. How do you fire a coach at the Big South level after winning the conference and making the NCAA tournament? (Without violations, scandals, etc.)

Ha, I hope that's a joke. Like Barber has the ability to call Grant and "make" him agree to coach at Liberty. College kids. 03-wink

That's a pretty ridiculous petition. I find it hard to take the person serious. I think Grant would be a phenomenal head coach and quite the catch if we could hire him but doing it this way looks like a joke. You'd be better off just emailing or tweeting Jeff Barber and/or the athletic department.

Well I would prefer you talk to him sometime after April 7th. 03-wink One thing I can also tell you Coach Gott lets Coach Lutz run the defense. One reason I would hate to see him go. I will say this, I hope he turns Liberty into a NCAA contender for the Big South if hired.

I get irritated how Liberty is disrespected by so many "Tolerant Fans". I am hoping Liberty gets a shot at FBS. They are one of the universities that can afford to go FBS and are being held out for the wrong reasons. I think Coach Lutz would be a good compliment to Coach McGill. 04-cheers

Wolf, I also want to say thanks for the Lutz conversation. That point about him running the defense is great to know. Of all the names mentioned, he's my hope Liberty and he reach a deal. Plus nice wins to date.

It appears Sendek is going to be out at Az St. Believe it or not, he would not be a bad hire for you all. Sendek is a coach that needs to be in a smaller conference. I think in conference BS this he could create a dynasty.

So it appears that Meyer and Lutz are the frontrunners. Would it be safe to assume neither of them end up the LU coach and a surprise hire is made? Some name we haven't heard yet?
