Delaware - I would have thought that UMD would have carried this state.
Mass - I am amazed that harvard beat BC.
Vermont and New Hampshire - I am amazed that either Syracuse or UConn didn't carry these states.
Rhode Island - I can see Prov., but I would imagine that UConn is in the running.
The state of RI has Providence clearly in 1st, and URI down several rungs in 2nd. Support for UConn doesn't cross the Connecticut border. That might sound weird cuz the states are so small, but New Englanders can be territorial, plus there's the old BE rivalry.
College basketball is huge in Connecticut and Rhode Island, and has some decent support in central and western Massachusetts. BC used to have solid support while in the old Big East, but attendance for hoops has tailed off.
At the "other" site a couple of months ago, we had a discussion about Big East expansion, and were trying to figure out what would be the best supported team in Massachusetts. In looking at home game attendance from November to the end mid-January, the numbers were a little unexpected...
Of the 7 Div-1 hoops programs:
- UMass led with an average of around 5k or 6k.
- Boston College was next, but their average was only around 3k to 4k... if their 7k home game vs PC was removed (half of Conte were Friar fans), then the average was 3k. Pitt only drew 2500, but not sure why.
- Holy Cross was 3rd with around 2500, as they cover central Mass in Worcester, but play in small on-campus gym (though downtown Worcester has a 12k arena). Used to have huge following 30+ years ago.
- Harvard was no more than 2k.
- Northeastern was around 1200.
- Boston University, which on paper looks like it would have potential, averaged an astonishing 800 fans.
- Lowell of course was around 400 fans.
UMass (football), BC (ACC, football), and Harvard (Ivy, academics) were ruled out as expansion possibilities. BU and Northeastern draw no one to games. Lowell of course isn't possible. In my opinion, that left Holy Cross by process of elimination as the "best" or "least worst" expansion candidate. So we dropped any thought of getting into the state of Mass.
Also, Providence averages 10k. UConn would be the same, but Gampel at around 8k on campus limits their average. UMass and URI average 5k to 6k. PC, UConn and BC all drew well when we were all in the Big East together.
