RE: Rice vs. USM (Saturday)
Lewis is hit by a pitch to lead off B7. Retaliation for the T7 HBP?? Nahhh, right? Then a walk to Teykl and a FC by Wunderlich. 1 down, Owls on the corners for 3-hit Chandler.

Chandler Ks, but today's 3 hits allow Ryan to leapfrog Kirby for the team lead in hits on the season, at least for the time being. 45 to 44.

Ford walks to load the bases, then Byrd goes down swinging. That's 8 Ks for the Owls, one more than the Au Eagles.

Still 11-3, going T8. Here comes Myers with a well-deserved relief outing.

I believe Byrd just said, "I respectfully disagree with your interpretation of the strike zone and the pitch's location." Twice.

RE: Rice vs. USM (Saturday)
Finally, after all the Gametracker teases, we get to see USM's Reeves. And Myers grounds him out!! 4-up, 3-down for the Great Dane!!

To B8 we go, the Institute leading 11-3. Come on, bats!!

RE: Rice vs. USM (Saturday)
Hunter Kopyczhlausjflakjnlansgfysjalkjafshfywlkdnski now replaces JC behind the plate, leads off the 8th, and walks. Nice at-bat, Alphabet. Up comes Kirby.

Kirby singles!! His first hit of the day, and he moves back into a tie with Chandler for team lead. Two Owls on the tree, nobody out. Let's go, Charlie!

Grrr. Warren takes an axe to the tree and hits into a 6-4-3 DP. Hunter moves to 3rd, but now two down. Lewis pops up. No runs for Rice. 11-3 going T9. Let's close this out, Dane!!

RE: Rice vs. USM (Saturday)
Myers needs 3 outs to give Rice its third CUSA series of the young season. Here we go!

Lear strikes out. ONE DOWN!

Scott walks.

Chuckles hits a single. Eagles on 1st and 2nd.

Kline K's!! TWO DOWN!!

PH Roussel walks, and the bases are full of Klimt Eagles.

Be careful here, Dane. USM is only two grand slams away from tying this game.

Woof. Sterling walks. RBI. 11-4 Rice. Bases still loaded.

And Wayne's seen enough balls. (Haven't we all?) In comes the Baron. Let's go, Otto!! Ich bin ein strike-throwing Berliner!!

I think WG made the right decision. Give Myers a chance to get Sterling but, then, bring in someone fresh.

In other action, UTSA crushes FAU 14-3, and UAB leads WKU 6-1 in the 7th. Much obliged, Blaze-Runners.

Probably lefty/righty - USM's reliever is a lefty. But it could be because he didn't attempt a play on a ground ball through the left side that he might have been able to reach.

Great to see us come out and jump on their mediocre starter, but we had all of 3 hits the final 7 innings against their 2nd tier relievers. It's like we totally took the foot off the pedal and changed our approach at the plate.

Still, very good win....and Blake's best effort of the season; certainly his longest. He reverted to his old tried and true formula of pounding the strikezone and no issuing any free passes, and then limiting USM hits to singles. Second consecutive quality start and 7-inning outing for our starting pitcher. Third game in the last four with our pitchers notching 10+ strikeouts. Not sure why The OG wasted Otto to get the final out in the 9th with the game so well in hand.

Tomorrow, we've got Stephens for a maximum of 80 pitches, followed by Solecitto, Williamson, Otto and/or Ditman (who has been rested since last Sunday, so should be good to go 3+ innings if need be). We go against USM's best starter so far this season, and their top three relievers (including a southpaw) have yet to be used...

Sr RHP James McMahon: 6 starts, 4-0, 3 complete games, 38.0 IP, 1.18 ERA, .187 BAA, 11 BBs, 28 Ks

Jr LHP Jake Winston: 8 app, 1-0, 16.0 IP, 0.56 ERA, .273 BAA, 6 BBs, 3 HBP, 9 Ks
Jr LHP Luke Lowery: 12 app, 2-3, 12.2 IP, 1.42 ERA, .116 BAA, 4 BBs, 9 Ks
Sr RHP Ryan Milton: 10 app, 1-0, 10.2 IP, 2.53 ERA, .225 BAA, 4 BBs, 13 Ks

We really need the sweep to both offset last week's series loss to ODU and help restore the teams' mojo. Let's get it done. Go Owls!

Where was he hit when he was plunked in the first inning?

Three hits and eight base runners (two hits that were not homers, four walks, HBP, reached based on third strike) in the final seven innings. But only one run scored from all that (the homer). We got most of the lucky breaks in the first inning.

Separately, our inability to get the bunt down yielded multiple runs for the second game in a row.

The bases were loaded.
Dane was really struggling to get the third out and had just walked in a run.
He appeared to be one pitch away from letting USM get several more runs.
The OG needed to get this one over with: Otto got the job done.

be careful you cannot question any decisions. I would have liked to see Myers close it out.

From the looks of Southern Miss tomorrow will be a win. It is their 3rd starter vs our best. Jordan will be Friday night starter within 3 weeks. You also have Orewiler in that mix.

Looks like David got new fox hats, as the ones we were wearing a couple years ago I don't believe had the ear flaps.

Given Myers pitched today, I think Austin is being saved for Lamar. And as I posted above, USM's Sunday starter has the best across-the-board stats on their pitching staff, including 3 complete games. However, I agree that if Jordan shuts them down the first 2 - 3 innings, and we can take an early lead, we may have them down for the count. Let's hope it plays out that way.
