ECE Seminar Series: "The Physics of Sound – Time, Frequency, and Amplitude" Paul Reed Smith, PRS Guitars
Wednesday, April 1, 2015
4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
1064 Duncan Hall
Rice University
6100 Main St
Houston, Texas, USA

The fundamental basis of physics in sound (and waveforms in general) involves time, frequency, amplitude, harmonics, inharmonic noises and sinusoidal events. This interactive lecture will break these basics down so the attendees have a clear beginning understanding of how each of these waveform/sound elements work and interact with the other elements. In addition, Mr. Smith will be demonstrating “in real time” these different aspects of waveform sound physics. This two hour seminar should be informative and fun. Mr. Smith was invited to Rice by Professor Gene Frantz who will also be interactively in attendance. It is strongly requested by Mr. Smith that attendees are there for the full duration and do not "come and go".

Biography of Paul Reed Smith:

Paul Reed Smith – guitar maker, innovator, musician, founder and Managing General Partner of Paul Reed Smith Guitars, was born in Bethesda, Maryland. He made his first playable guitar for extra credit at St. Mary’s College. In 1985 with the help of many others, he turned that positive experience into Paul Reed Smith Guitars. Today PRS Guitars generates about 43 million dollars a year in revenue. It is the third largest electric guitar manufacturer in America. Their list of artist endorsers reads like a who’s-who list of contemporary musicians. In addition to their award-winning reputation for instruments of outstanding quality, beauty and tone, PRS Guitars has also established a tradition of philanthropy, generously supporting many worthwhile organizations and causes, both locally and globally most notably Johns Hopkins Oncology. In 2002, Smith was awarded the “Small Business Person of the Year Award” for Maryland. He has been honored with a resolution on the floor of the Maryland House of Delegates for his contributions to the State, and was twice a finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Smith has also been prolific in the areas of patents and trademarks with almost 100 registered and pending trademarks, copyrights and over two dozen patents. Recently, two seminal patents were granted for a new technology PRS is developing, “Precision Measurement of Waveforms” and “Scoring and Adjusting Pixels Based on Neighborhood Relationships for Revealing Data in Images”. Paul Reed Smith presides over research and development for new PRS product and technology, serves as a mentor through motivational lectures to Maryland high school students, cherishes his role as husband and parent and is an accomplished guitarist who, despite his schedule, has played with Carlos Santana, Mark Tremonti, Chuck Brown and a host of other notable artists and continues to write, perform and record music with The Paul Reed Smith Band.

Sounds like an awesome good time! Wish I didn't have to be at work.

Someone needs to make a video of this lecture and put it on YouTube. Or does Rice already automatically do that for this type of guest lecture?

It varies. A key factor is whether the host department budgeted money to pay for the staff time to record and post-produce it. The post-production seems to be surprisingly time-consuming.
