TU Spring Football
Well good folks, I went to the spring fling this morning. Not sure what I saw, but it was FFAASSTT offense.

IMO there is going to be a transition to the new way things are done. I tried to concentrate on the QBs and they DID look somewhat better, but i still think DE has a hard time throwing that deeep ball beyond 25-30 yards. The good part is that I'm pretty sure PM will expect the QBs to run and read the option mesh points. The OL still has some work to do as far as consistency. But in a controlled scrimmage where no tackling is allowed, its hard to gather in what the team will look like. From what i saw, our corners need a lot of improvement and the WRs were pretty much beating them whenever they wanted. Our RB's looked OK, but I was hoping for a lot of breakaways and that didn't occur as much as I'd hoped. Punting looked good, but the PK was very inconsistent.

Anyone else there?

RE: TU Spring Football
I haven't made it out there yet this spring, & probably won't be able to until the spring game. I've heard others say the same things Rabid said about our WRs beating our DBs regularly. I really think we have a very good group of young WRs, so I'm glad to hear they are taking advantage of our new offense.

As far as DBs are concerned, we have 7 freshman DBs coming this summer, including the SMU transfer (Reed) & the highly recruited safety from Spiro (Whitfield).
I think at least 2 or 3 of these freshmen DBs are going to have to be ready to contribute immediately for our defense to be respectable this fall.

RE: TU Spring Football
Just for those interested, the Spring Game is Saturday - April 18 at 1:00pm. My hope is no injuries, no missed assignments and big plays on both side of the ball. Go TU! Lets get back on track.

I'm hoping too! I just wonder if the weather were "inclement", that the game might be postponed to another date throught the week. TBH, that might inconvenience some folks but also might keep the kids from getting injured or the fans from getting wet.. Just a thought.

RE: TU Spring Football
After reading the reviews of the Spring game......I don't know which defense will get worn out first.....ours or our opponents!!! If we have very many three and out situations, our defense is going to be on the field a lot!! Three and out may take a minute off the clock and the defense will be back on the field.......but I'm not griping......I liked it when we won a game 55-45!!! It sounds like Coach Monty is living up to his reputation and I'm glad of that!!! I think we will be in better shape than most teams we play and that could pay off big time in the 4th quarter. I'm pumped about football season!!!!!

If any of you CAN, you might go to our rivals site and read the very good article on the improvement TU's defense has made this spring. Bill Young outlines the progress and identifies a few weaknesses. I think our 1st team defense will be pretty salty. Not sure after that - depth issues.

I think we'll be improved. How much? Stay tuned.

RE: TU Spring Football
Been looking at some CFB magazines (Lindy's and Sporting News) that just came out and they seem to think TU will be the worst team in the conference. Well, I must disagree. WE weren't the worst last year and actually finished ahead of three teams which put us at 8th ahead of Tulane, SMU and bottom feeder UCONN. We have a lot of starters coming back - 7 on defense and 8 on offense plus our very good punter and a snapper that hasn't made a mistake since he was put in the position. So i can't see us losing to SMU and Tulane even though we play away from Chapman.

I think a lot of these preseason mags just don't spend much time making good judgements on the non-P5 teams and they tend to cater to their favorite teams instead of who is logically the better one. IMO we have enough talent to have a 500 or better record and I think if we don't it'll be a disappointment. I see us ahead of Tulane, SMU and winning 5-6 games. IMO

I think Tulsa will surprise some teams this year and even give the better teams a ride for their money!! I could easily see us bowl eligible with 6 or 7 wins!!!!

RE: TU Spring Football
The mags only that see Tulsa has a new coaching staff and we were toward the bottom of the conference last year. For them that's enough to put TU at the bottom. They probably really don't have a clue what Tulsa has coming on offense.

RE: TU Spring Football
I agree....without really looking at the team, we probably do look like a bottom dweller but with an experienced QB, some good receivers.......and a completely new offense, I think we will score........the only question mark is the defense......can we hold them to fewer points than we score......even if we score 30-40 points. If Dane doesn't even end up the #1 QB, that just means that someone better at running this offense is in there which just makes us better.
