5 Baseball teams going to the NCAA Tournament
This has never happened in conference history. Quite a year the Big 10 is having with OSU winning the Football title, Wisconsin & Michigan State playing in the Big Dance Final 4, Maryland winning the Men's Lacrosse title and now baseball success! 04-jawdrop

Um, you may want to amend the OP. It was the women of Maryland that won the LAX title.

Yeah agree, the Women won but the Men got stomped out by Denver.

To the original post, very good year for the league. The Big12 only got 3 bids and they had 3 in the CWS last year. The issue going forward will be the sustainability of the success. As we saw with Indiana, they lost their coach to Arizona State and I think that the Southern and Western schools will use the the B1G as a recruiting ground for coaches as they are not destination jobs comparatively. Regardless of the disadvantages we have especially with weather I like the progress of the league and the commitment institutionally being shown across the league. New ballparks, newer facilities, fully funded scholarships and recruiting budgets, and relaxing of that stupid oversigning rule that handicapped our schools from having the kind of depth enjoyed in other parts of the country.

It depends on the pay. If you want to keep good coaches then you have to be competitive with the pay. Baseball right now may be one of the last truly old time college team sports. It's good to see that the Big 10 has more than just a pulse, you now have consciousness. Awareness will follow and then support.

Your schools have had a terrific first day at the tournament. I hope this ends the stupid discussion of lacrosse on a baseball thread. Your teams deserve better!

No mention of Sparty getting screwed on a bid.

The same thing happens to the SEC every year at the NCAA basketball tourney. We are not perceived nationally to be strong so one or sometimes two of our programs get hosed. The Big 10 hasn't been perceived as a baseball threat at all until recent Indiana success. This year it appears that you guys deserved at least six bids. The SEC probably received 1 too many, and that would be my Tigers who lost our top starting pitcher mid year to an arm injury and really don't have the pitching depth to contend in a 4 team tournament. If we swept a regional we might be able to cobble together enough arms. But in reality that would require two complete games and the bullpen pitching the third. Therefore since we really couldn't contend I feel we probably should have sat this one out.

On the other side of the coin the Big 10 could have easily had another school left out. Things broke right with the small conference tournaments so that that didn't happen. But I'm one who believes that if you don't finish in the top 40% of your conference you don't need to be playing for a title anyway whether in basketball, softball, or baseball. In other words none of our conferences of 14 deserve more than 6 entrants in any of these tournaments.

Ohio State winning the national championship is not really news. OSU has historically been a contender. Big 10 basketball strength top to bottom isn't news. It has always been historically a strong basketball conference. Placing two schools in the Super Regionals and hosting one is HUGE NEWS! Nothing else speaks to the Big 10's overall intention to be relevant in all sports than this. Kudos! I'm more impressed with this accomplishment than all others coming out of the Big 10 this year. It will be great for college baseball and the tournament. JR

As a Buckeye I respectfully disagree. Getting out first "official" win in a bowl game over an SEC team and chasing that with a National Title is huge for me. ***Side note** The game against Bama was more satisfying.
I will agree with you that it is enormous for the game that the B1G has become relevant. Can only help the game grow.
