I hope not, since he would have sided with the Union has state lawmakers decided to not secede. He was loyal to his state. His state should remain loyal to him m

Most knuckleheads aren't smart enough or too lazy to scratch below the surface and see the complexity. Maybe the Confederate flag discussion will highlight the complexity, but I doubt it. I also thank Dr. Hallman for his perspective on US/Old South history. The best 2-min perspective that I know of is the Gettysburg movie with Billy Yank chatting with Johnny Reb prisoners ("fightin' for my 'rats'") and they come away realizing they aren't even fighting for the same thing.

If we really want to get technical, James Madison was one of many 18th century men who owned slaves. Dare we rename the school to not offend?

I hear UVA is going to distance themselves from Thomas Jefferson

Really!? I hadn't heard that. Could you give some specifics? I know Jefferson wasn't perfect, but he was the founder of the school and most UVA people I know rave about him still.

I believe that was sarcasm.

Someone also told me we are going to have to write a new national anthem because Francis Scott Key purchased his first slave in 1800 and suppression of abolitionists.

Dr. Hallman was great; one of my favorites. The last day of his Old South class, he taught us all how to make a good Mint Julep.

Okay, I got you. I usually have a great sarcasm detector, but at this point, nothing would surprise me in what has been a recent rush to prove who is the most PC.

Bigger question - When will Virginia stop recognizing Lee-Jackson day in January?

So since you would like Virginia to stop recognizing that holiday (for the record I didn't even know that was a holiday), I'm assuming you would also like JMU to stop recognizing Jackson and Ashby as well on those buildings?

Why should the Commonwealth stop observing Lee-Jackson Day?

In slightly related news, the Jefferson Davis statue on monument avenue in Richmond was vandalized with spray paint writing "black lives matter".

Come to think of it...

Do I have to change my user name on here? James and Dolley owned slaves just like Thomas Jefferson. Maybe JMU will have to go back to being called the State Normal and Industrial School for Women [and Men] at Harrisonburg.

whoa well let me clarify; Lee-Jackson day affords me a 4-day weekend so personally I'm all about it. I offered it only as a hypothetical - that it's probably a matter of time until the PC police call for an end to the recognition of a day honoring two Confederate military leaders.

I don't know why you would assume I'm in favor of renaming 2 buildings. I'm not, but to that end I really don't care what they're called. I'm not in favor of renaming something just to rename it because it offends 4 people. GTFO with that.

Surprised this hasn't been covered yet. You can blame President Burruss for this problem.

The building was named by the Class of 1913 at their fifth reunion. When their first choice, Burruss Hall, was overridden by the Board of Trustees and President Burruss, the class chose to honor Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Though it housed classrooms as early as 1915, Jackson became the home to the history department following a major renovation in 1971.

Same link, Ashby Hall:

Originally called Dormitory No. 2, it was renamed in 1917 for Confederate General Turner Ashby, who was killed during the Civil War a few miles east of campus.

Interestingly enough Lee wasn't a fan of the flag post Civil War. Now you have people who are suddenly the flag's biggest defender in his name but it is the others with knee jerk reactions.

I am offended that you would limit it to only women and men, as though those are the only two "genders." How absurd. Apologize at once to the entire board.

For the record, it's Lee-Jackson-King day. If this holiday was removed, wouldn't Spike, Jesse, and Rodney be a little upset.

ehh close but not quite. All 3 were celebrated on the same day until 2000 when Governor Gilmore proposed splitting the day into 2 separate holidays given the incongruous nature of their accomplishments. Virginia separately recognizes Lee–Jackson Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
