Not really a 'wolf'

This article from the NY Times explains the history of the NC State live mascot and its struggles to secure a real "wolf".

Quote:That did not stop North Carolina State from trying. Fans and students sold 25-cent shares and collected enough money to buy yet another timber wolf in 1966. This time, it worked out for a while. Lobo III was comfortable around people and used to delight fans by howling on the sideline. He was the perfect fit. Or so it seemed.

One day, a zoology professor took a closer look. It turned out that Lobo III was a coyote.

Wow.

But honestly it could have been worse. This is NC State we are talking about. They could have done what they usually do with athletics marketing and tried to use one of these

as their live wolf mascot.

The Tamaskan is a mix of German shepherd, Alaskan malamute and Siberian husky. When your mascot is a wolf it makes sense that you don't use a real wolf. It sounds to me like Wave makes a good mascot.

Just change your mascot to the Six-Pack. You'll find an amazing variety of potential candidates at the corner store.

IMO they should change their name to the Possums.

They play dead at home and get killed on the road.

Harsh, but funny.

I actually owned a half Timber wolf / half Akita hybrid. He weighed about 180 and stood over 6 feet on his hind legs. When I took him to obedience training as a pup, the real dogs did not like being around him. Bar none best canine I ever owned. Died at 6 years old from a heart attack.
