The event was a positive for Liberty to again gain national attention. The students were respectful and the moderator at the end asked insightful questions. Having "Liberty University" as a back drop for his 27 minute speech, and for the Q&A, will be shown on all local, regional media today and rebroadcast on C-Span.
What was wise for the university was to invite Bernie, to help keep maintain it's non profit status. Let's hope others Democrats, will appear in the future to balance the Republican dominated convocation speakers.
Bernie did not pander to the crowd and used his skills to address issues he knew would be agreeable while touching on, but steering away from heated issues.
An A+ for the university today.

I give him kudos for coming. Most dems refuse to come. I know this is a sports forum, but I can't understand the position of Sanders. He champions the rights of parents for leave when a child is born, because it's good for the child and the parents. He has no issue with that baby being murdered just a few weeks before that though through being aborted. We live in an upside down world.

I think it's fantastic. College is where you find yourself and bounce different ideas off each other. People might disagree with Sanders but that causes a healthy debate on why. Only inviting people that have views more inline with LU's mission isn't really expanding students minds.

People want to see Liberty less "far right" but they've made the invitations to Democratic politicians and have been rejected in the past. One finally accepted and it's surprising that he wasn't tarred and feathered and banished forever, right? Maybe this will open doors and show that Liberty is respectful to all political viewpoints despite not agreeing with them and more politicians will come in the future.

Check out the FB comments on LU's FB post after Sanders did the convo. Pretty negative comments from a handful of alums. Obviously this doesn't reflect how all LU supporters feel but it was surprising. On Flamesfans they seem pretty supportive of it even if they disagreed with Sanders policy's.

When 12,000 people are assembled, in any situation, there is going to be a wide spectrum of thoughts, feelings, passions and more. Mix in the conservative stance of those at the Sanders convocation and it will be most all right leaning in values and opinions.
Those alums who took the time to type their negative comments would make their negative comments with or without Bernie being in Lynchburg. Only a close minded conservative, yes conservatives can be open minded but not swayed by others opinion, would be offended by what Bernie said yesterday. It appeared he placed a high importance on this appearance by veering away from his canned, stump speech and at times, speaking impromptu. Most of these campaign appearances are a repeat of a canned stump speech over and over. Yesterday, Sanders made his campaign points and mixed in points unique to Liberty.
It is funny and expected that the self-proclaimed "purveyors of tolerance and diversity," aka Democrats, liberals, progressives, communists, etc. aren't mentioning that Convocation is required like they did for Ted Cruz's announcement.
The student population is far from being far right, at least when I was a student that is. My dorm had plenty of students who voted Democrat and had a party when their candidate won the presidential election. Now I don't know how other dorms went but the entire student body seemed to be heavily invested into the election from the viewpoint of all parties, not just Republican and Democrat.
Are any of you in the LinkedIn LU Alum group page? There is an old school LU Alum and he is really hating that Sanders spoke at LU.....like REALLY hates. I'm sort of trolling him because of how crazy he's being.....LOL

Good reply. There are fundamental extremists on both sides. Those who justify using violence to those who support choice (clinic bombers) and those who support pro life and their moral dilemma.
It's commendable you choose to dialogue with him. He's so righteous that he's not open to any conversation other than those who agree with him. Just be prepared for a long road of challenging conversation with little if any agreement.
