UCF boxes make the places seem more intimate. I think this could be a good fit for Kaplan, given apparent similarities in building size.

Yes it does, but they also have both ends closed off. That helps, too.

Agree. That's by far the biggest drawback about the Hall, IMO. It needs a face-lift, nicer concourse, etc., but the open end just takes the air out of the place.

I guess our priority is a multi-sport practice facility. After taking care of this, we can prioritize Kaplan.

In the middle picture, the left baseline seating looks different (color and no seatbacks). I wonder if that is retractable and if that could work for the open gap in Kaplan for concerts and graduation.

I'd think a practice facility could be built simultaneously in stages to a renovation if there was to be any exterior work...essentially extend the building to form a T of sorts. Is there room at that back service entrance?

I actually like an idea of having women's volley and basketball games played at the proposed multi-sport facility. We should design it with about 1000 seating.

Noticed there will be a cash bar in the Wightman Cup room, between the women's game and the men's ODU game this Saturday. Open to the public. A nice step toward enhancing the game day experience at Kaplan.

Does the College's charter need to be amended to allow for seating all the way around the court/field of play for Football and/or Basketball? It is a strange quirk of design in the facilities for both of these sports at W&M.

The Hall turns 50 in a few years. Id say thats reason enough for a major renovation.

Have been sorry to see the back of the parking lot return to trailer and parts storage. Parking will be a bear for the Gold Rush and Charleston games.

I’ve avoided going on my yearly rant on this topic. The space I had to squeeze into and practically crawl out of my window last Saturday game always absurd. If I hadn’t dropped the wife and kid at the door, no way I could have gotten him out of his car seat. It’s a disgrace.

That's really disappointing. I was glad to see the athletic department make that change its too bad they've gone back to storage.

While not perfect, they are running shuttles back & forth to and from Kaplan from alternate parking locations at the Gold Rush game.

How would I know this? I’ve seen nothing that tells me it.

And that’s great for Gold Rush, what about all of the other games when they run it of parking while I don’t know... 20-30 spaces are taken up by storage boxes? Might even be more than that.

It’s a disgrace IMO.

A great model for the renovation of Kaplan Arena is University of Richmond's Robins Center. Originally a very similar barn to Kaplan, the Robins Center was built in '72 with a cavernous seating capacity of 9,000+.

U of R renovated it in 2013-14, reducing the capacity to 7,200 and adding bowl (all-the-way-around) seating that was more vertical, four video boards (one in each corner) and skyboxes. Cost was $17 million.

Too bad that there is not land next to the parking lot where trees could be felled and sold to help defray the cost of modifying it suitable for storage.
