FYI, the Tribe Shop website linked above is having a 30% off sale through Nov 26. Get your holiday shopping done early, fellow cheapskates!

They definitely should look into it. That is the reason the Highlights from the HP game were not as professional looking as last season. The cameras are trying to adjust to the huge difference in reflected light and are not able to do it quickly enough.

Agree. Too bright and illegible because of this.

They fixed it. Green background now. Looks great.

I noticed that, too. Guess they read Tribe Talk, as well.

I was thrilled when I saw this yesterday. Looks worlds better.

Well done, mysterious athletic department staff Tribe Talk reader! Well done!

JMU's new arena is rising
https://app.oxblue.com/open/sbballard/jm...tioncenter

I dont understand why JMU seems to have so little difficulty finding funds for these projects, but for W&M, it is such a hurdle. We have as many alums (living...for now), live by the same state constraints regarding Govt funds/student fees. Could W&M partner with williamsburg to try to use the Hall for more local events...wasnt that how it was originally built?

JMU has more than double the student fees just due to enrollment. And they allot a larger percentage of their fees to athletics. It is not even close. I am thinking that JMU funds about 80% if their athletic budget with student fees, and they have the largest budget in the CAA. It’s not an even playing field and if we want to make it so, we have to find a different way.

Perhaps the largest football allocation in FCS?

Is that a strategic move or do we simply have less money coming in to the department? What's being underfunded?

Several tangential threads touching on the Kaplan renovation. Centralization works.

Id guess theyd build the practice facility first as an addition, which would allow for renovation of the remaining building.

I wonder if the Boehlys are leading the way for this venture?

Play half a season at Hampton Coliseum?

For the record, my comment above was totally tongue in cheek and really had nothing to do with Kaplan. It was my poor attempt at humor and poking fun at one of the job requirements of the job opening which Tribal posted.

I think you are fooling yourself. JMU had a difficult time finding someone to pony up enough money to help get this project moving. They aren't exactly flush with wealthy alums. It took some time as I read. Even at that, an offshoot of UVA has part of the branding in the arena, not sure why.

Unlike W&M, a facility update had become an absolute necessity at JMU. They are playing in a dated facility that seats 6,000 - with an enrollment now 3 times that, or close - not to mention the need for a non basketball facility that can hold a larger crowd.

How is that fooling myself? They got it done.

Kaplan is dated and vacuous. Are wealthy donors lining up to push our renovation forward? We theoretically have it easier in this regard.

UVA health isnt that terrible of a sponsor to have on the court...JMU doesnt have a medschool and its likely a separate entity from the university. The floor will simply say UVA orthopedics. It doesnt say UofR Business or ODU Engineering. They arent really rivals by any means.

This is my assumption as to funding. I'm very interested to see what a prospective timeline would look like.

Just published an article on the renovation announcement, and did some research on Richmond's Robins Center renovation for comparison's sake.

Very interesting stuff!

I think calling this a renovation announcement is a little misleading, all Huge said was it's a 'top priority.'

Wasn't hiring JTIII (or someone with his pedigree) as our MBB head coach a "top priority" too?

Because you said they have such little difficulty funding these projects - when in fact, they had a very difficult time finding a sponsor for this. Their state of need on this facility is much more dire than Kaplan.

If you raised the roof of Kaplan, the electronics could go in. Close off that open end and include some suites. Widen portions of outer hall for 20th century concessions. Wa La.
Hampton Coliseum is a great idea.

RE: The Hall, AKA "Kaplan Arena"
If Kaplan is to host the CAA women's tourney in 2024 and the 50th anniversary is 2021 (opened 1971), perhaps the tentative timeline is to start construction after the 2020-21 season to commemorate this "milestone". Due to the nature of an extensive renovation, it might require 2 or 3 off-seasons.
