Van Horn is a 2014 first team all-conference that should be anchoring a line that some were touting during the off-season as being better this year than last. We have an all-conference caliber TE. Allen, McManus, Reeves, Foster and others have talent at WR. We have Johnson (though fighting injury again) and Pittman running downhill....and we have a freshman that 3-0 as a starter and has made some plays... Yet we don't have consistence or a true identity on offense. Our offensive line had huge expectations, and that's been the disappointment. On paper, our offense should be at the top of the league, but there's still work to do.

I can't believe that after this week, we are halfway through the regular season. I do feel like sometime shouting out that the rumors of Marshall's demise are greatly exaggerated. Every year is always different in college ball and there's a different chemistry and a 25% roster turnover. I do think this Marshall team, from the coach down, is taking a long view, business-like approach "to improving each week", and may not feel like it's back is in a corner and doing whatever it takes to scratch, claw, and fight its way to a victory. It will be interesting to see the intensity this week to see if Marshall is really coming out to win, or if we "pace ourselves" in our own improvement journey. I see this happening a bit this week and think USM may come in with the "fire in the belly" advantage similar to what WKU did to us last year - Marshall came out to play another game, WKU came to play a statement game... And by the time one realizes it, it's too late.

In the end you either win or lose. Everything else is just excuses.

And I can't wait for your excuses as to why you lost to a team that you are supposedly better than at nearly every position.

So.....yes we will scorer 38 on your "championship caliber defense".

Per Sagarin Predictor updated today, Kent and Texas State would be a push on a neutral field.

And you would open as a slight underdog to Purdue... and Ohio.

Sorry.

Sorry. Not at all. Sagarin sucks.

First response in this thread from an USM fan that doesn't seem as ridiculous as pregame smack talk from an FIU fan. 05-stirthepot

Sorry.

Mississippi State - 28
Nebraska - 47
Texas State - 146

Ohio - 80
Purdue - 92
Kent State - 150

Southern Miss has definitely played the tougher schedule

Southern Miss has a top 15 scoring offense and Marshall's is ranked like 103. The rankings are reversed for defense. It comes down to who can exploit the others weaknesses more.

Yeah congrats on losing by 8 to 2-3 Nebraska. You'll probably win the national title.

Not any stupider than some Marshall fans bragging about beating Purdue at home.

There is a difference though. We won and you didn't. I guess the last 3 years has caused you guys to lose some self respect. You weren't about moral victories when we joined this conference.

I think you'll find most of us rarely delve into threads like this. We often get accused of things other people say about us later, but it's not Herd fans. There are, of course, 42 exceptions to that rule.

I expect this game will be more like our traditional matchups of our early CUSA arrival which ended up as OT games or last second wins/losses. Our D and your O match up well and vice versa. Could be a low scoring defensive type game. If it's a shootout then we probably lose as we'll run out of ammo pretty quickly.

I didn't get that at first.

I know that the transitive property doesn't apply, but you do realize that Purdue damn near beat Sparty on his own field, right??? Purdue is a better team than many think.

RE: **** Southern Miss @ Marshall live game thread ****
Here is a statistical breakdown (based off of stats from NCAA website):
Southern Miss:
Passing Offense- 14th 338 yds/gm
Rushing Offense- 60th 176 yds/gm
Total Offense- 13th 514 yds/gm
Scoring Offense- 15th 40 pts/gm
Rushing D- 103rd 202 yds/gm
Passing Eff. D- 92nd 134
Total D- 106th 444 yds/gm
Scoring D- 87th 28 pts/gm
Red Zone D- 25th 74%

Marshall:
Passing Offense- 91st 196 yds/gm
Rushing Offense- 94th 155 yds/gm
Total Offense- 103rd 351 yds/gm
Scoring Offense- 51st 32 pts/gm
Rushing D- 90th 188 yds/gm
Passing Eff. D- 4th 86
Total D- 43rd 348 yds/gm
Scoring D- 31st 19pts/gm
Red Zone D- 109th 92%

The question really becomes is our offense as good as we think it is and/or is Marshall's D as good as they believe it is? If you look at the ranks of the teams each has played, the answer to both questions may be - not necessarily.

Southern Miss & Marshall's Opponents Rankings:
Passing Off:
Southern Miss- #26, #28, #29, #89
Marshall- #57, #61, #113, #119

Rushing Off:
Southern Miss- #30, #42, #81, #93
Marshall- #68, #80, #88, #96

Total Off:
Southern Miss- #21, #25, #40, #96
Marshall- #70, #85, #118, #124

Scoring Off:
Southern Miss- #36, #53, #64, #122
Marshall- #70, #74, #117, #123

Rushing Def:
Southern Miss- #12, #84, #114, #119
Marshall- #9, #45, #98, #106

Pass Eff. Def:
Southern Miss- #69, #97, #125, #127
Marshall- #11, #36, #76, #83

Total Def:
Southern Miss- #69, #101, #125, #127
Marshall- #6, #45, #80, #96

Scoring Def:
Southern Miss- #23, #65, #124, #127
Marshall- #27, #72, #94, #99

Based on this information, it would appear that Marshall's defensive stats are skewed because they have played average to poor offensive teams. We will be by far the best offense they have faced this season, thus far.
At the same time, the same presumption could be made about our offensive stats. We have played average to poor defenses this year.
This game comes down to which side can exploit the others weakness the most. It will be strength vs. strength and weakness vs. weakness.

Not that subtle. I don't know why you feel the need to apologize for me. Just because I don't want to come on here and be bored out of my mind sometimes I have to inject a little fun into threads. If I hadn't been talking to these USM fans there would be about 10 posts in this thread. Herd fans have become boring IMO since ECU, Houston, Tulsa, Memphis and UCF left. You don't want to become like the ECU and UCF posters. Most of you think we are better than CUSA, I don't. I am thankful all those other guys left. We are winners again because for the most part our conference is weak.

Just enjoy the winning and brag a little bit, it won't last forever (see Mark Snyder era) We have won 26 games out of 32, or 17 out of 19.

Could we lose Friday, some would say yes. I won't though, they have sucked for 3 years and we are the best in this league now. 05-stirthepot

The best ONLY BECAUSE we have sucked for 3 years. We are on a different trajectory now. We don't suck for long. Its just not in our DNA.

Granted the game is still 4 days away but weather projections for Marshall on Friday is saying 70 for a high, low of mid 50's, and 80% chance of rain and storms. If that stays true that will help the Marshall D negate the USM passing offense to a degree.

Just want to point out to the USM fans beating their chest over the Nebraska game. Nebraska is 2-3 with wins over USA and USM. They have losses to BYU, Miami(who got whipped by Cincy last week) and to Illinois(who MTSU had beat and lost by 2 to the Illini). This is not a very good Nebraska team.
