Letter from the school president -- Discussion about Race, YALE, U of Missou
Dear Campus Community:

As we reflect on the national issues of inclusion and diversity that have most recently surfaced at the University of Missouri and Yale University, it saddens us that we still live in a world where injustice and inequity are realities. At Old Dominion University, every student, faculty and staff member is important to the fabric of our Monarch community. We pledge our commitment to ensure Old Dominion University remains a place where inclusion is valued and fostered.

One of our points of pride is the fact that our student population is one of the most multicultural in the nation. We work hard to hear all voices, knowing this important work can never stop. Many students select Old Dominion University because of the diversity of our student body. However, diversity does not equal inclusion. Inclusion happens when we come together for open dialogue and take action toward positive change.

Student voices play a key role in creating positive change, such as the discussion on inclusion led by the Old Dominion University student chapter of the NAACP. Last Tuesday night’s conversation was a great example of open dialogue that cultivates inclusion. In addition, the establishment of the 1ODU Student Inclusive Excellence Advisory Board will advance engagement among student groups on campus. This advisory board will provide guidance and recommendations to University leadership on issues of concern to the student body, and will address current events occurring on campus and nationally. Members of this advisory board will also gather student feedback to enhance our campus climate.

As noted in this year’s State of the University address, achieving inclusion is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. The Old Dominion University community will remain mindful and vigilant in our efforts.

Sincerely,

John R. Broderick

President

I've only been catching a few videos here and there about this.

WTF is a Safe Space?
Does ODU subscribe to this nonsense?

I haven't seen any discussion about this in my classes. I'm pretty far fro being PC, and am not looking forward to dealing with a coddled student freaking out because they don't want their feelings hurt.

I am all for inclusion and diversity. With that said, coddling college kids does not prepare them for the realities they will face in the "real world".
