RE: CUSA Basketball Week 3
MT ladies took on Ole Miss today. Huge win. 84-75 final score, three players with double-doubles. Looks like a completely different team from the UVA and CMU games. Clear need of work in our post play. Nowhere near what it needs to be, at all.

9th largest crowd in program history. Over 6,600!!!

Our average is now over 6,000 a game. Next home game is vs #13 Kentucky -- should also be a great crowd. We have a shot to be Top 15 or Top 10 in attendance this year in the country. We are currently 8th in the country in average attendance at 6,109 per game.

NC Central is the class of the MEAC, and I don't mean that as an insult. That's a good team.

LA Tech should beat them though!

Ohio State will be a lot tougher, but you never know. Good luck to the Bulldogs!

The Ohio State game is going to be interesting. We beat UTA who beat Ohio State. Have no clue what will happen, but if we want to have any chance this season, we need to beat them on the road.

Out of curiosity, how can MTSU pull these crowds for women B-Ball?
Very very impressive.

Better question is why do their men not draw crowds like that? I'd understand if their men's team was dogshit, but they've been at least respectable most seasons and very good for a few seasons recently. Seems the men's team has to have a great record before they start drawing 6000+.

Can mt fans shed some light on why the women draw better than the men?

It used to be the same way at Tech. Lots of wins, rankings, and quality opponents. When I was at Tech, the girls outdrew the men, even during Malone, Brown and White. Granted, we were hosting UNC, UT, USC, etc.

Now it's the opposite since the Techster's haven't been in the hunt for a few years.

Short answer - the head coach and the local focus of the team (3 starters are from Murfteesboro).

Long answer - Rick Insell is one of the states all time winningest HS girls basketball coaches and has a huge standing in the community. Since taking over at MT he has continued his winning tradition in a phenomenal way and has done hard work to keep the community super involved. He's been a draw for crowds since year one at Middle. The team is made up of a good number of local products who really stood out (like I said, three are starters). Huge number of community members who are devoted to the team has helped to grow things over time to where it is now.

The men suffer from a perpetual mediocrity which is amplified by our post season failures. If we were a bigger name in the state and nationally then I'm sure our men's crowds would rival the women. People are disillusioned with our men's hoops team, so that's the biggest factor IMO meanwhile the women have been really really good over and over for a long time now.

EDIT: Something to add - we have consistently averaged 3.5k-4.5k over the last ten or so years, with 2013-14 being our biggest average with around 5k. This season can and should top that. Definitely a cumulative effect.

Off-hand, I don't know if the Lady Monarchs ever outdrew the Monarchs for a whole season, but they used to have very strong crowds befitting a program that has been consistently excellent until fairly recently. There's still a core group, but as the Lady Monarchs faded—first from the national scene, then the conference race—the numbers have been dropping and the discontent has been rising.

RE: CUSA Basketball Week 3
It wasn't that long ago that ODU was drawing 4,000-6,000 to some women's games, regularly hosting NCAA first/second rounds, winning the CAA 17 years in a row, and regularly bringing in Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and the occasional Pac 12 schools to Norfolk. The last few years under former coach Wendy Larry, and current coach Karen Barefoot five year tenure have been demoralizing. Once Wendy was fired in 2011, it was also the end our 20+ year series with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers - Pat Summit always had great respect for the program even when the series stopped being competitive.

In my opinion, Barefoot will likely be shown the door sooner than later, as she has for the past 5 years scheduled cupcakes (for a school with a very long history of grueling out of conference schedules), loses to any decent competition (usually in blowout fashion), and down right cannot coach. She's a very nice women, but she followed a legend, and isn't getting it done.

2007-2008 was the last "good" year for the Lady Monarchs:

All these team from this area of the country all supported womens BB. WKU lost most of the fans during the dark ages of our last coach and are in rebuild mode. I would love to see WKU and MT start selling out games against each other

Seconded! WKU used to draw pretty well too, but apparently MTC really did a number on your fan support. I love heading to Diddle (03-puke 05-stirthepot) for games to watch our teams (and fans!) compete.

Too early to call Rice a disappointment? I can understand losing to Cal, and kinda understand losing to Oregon St. But, not being competitive against San Fransisco and not really competitive against Fresno?

I'd be very surprised if Mike Rhodes doesn't turn Rice around; I'm just not sure how long that may take.

Yes. Losing Marcus Jackson is huge.

RE: CUSA Basketball Week 3
Just as in football when a key part of your offense goes down......

good programs finds a replacement and still win. Good teams dont and lose. You might not be as good as you were when you have to replace a a key injured player but as I said above...good programs finds a way to get past the injury. Just as Western did when Chris Marcus went down in the 2nd or 3rd game. Western found a replacement to plug in and won 24 games and a 3rd stright trip to the ncaa tourney.

Just as Marshall did when their best running back went down, then number two running back. They still won other than 1 game. Just as Western did when our 2008 yards from scrimmage rb went down and out for the season in the 2nd games....Western plugged in a fr till our #2rb came back from injury 6 games into the season...keep on winning.

Good PROGRAMS gets past injuries....good teams don't

That's the difference between some of us...some have good programs. Some have a good team. HUGE DIFFERENCE between the two

Rice also lost Chad Lott, our second highest rated freshman, to a torn meniscus. My hope is that we can go on a little bit of a roll here with Lamar, UC Riverside, UT Arlington, and Houston Baptist coming up.

RE: CUSA Basketball Week 3
UTEP 88, Alcorn St. 66.

It's going to be an interesting year. I know the competition hasn't exactly been that great so far, but this is the best offensive team that we've had under Floyd. The one thing that worries me is that, in the past, when we went into an offensive lull in the game, we could lock the other team down for 4, 5, 6 possessions. I'm not sure that this team can do that.

On the injury front, it looks like Matt Willms is going to be out. He was supposed to miss the season, decided to give it a go, and it isn't looking good right now. And freshman Brodericks Jones looks like he had a pretty significant knee injury tonight. He's pretty raw, but he looks to have a bunch of upside. So, with Willms and probably Jones out for a while at least, our thin front court got significantly thinner.

We will see how good UAB is over the 2 weeks. Playing Illinois, Virginia tech or Iowa state, Georgia state, and Illinois state. Would really like to win 3 of 4.

Wow -- that is a tough stretch. It will tell a big story about UAB this year. Please win all your games and become ranked so we have an even stronger conference this year!! 04-rock
