The Star-Ledger just seems to be throwing a bunch of darts at a board. The more candidates they name, the greater the chance of being able to say "Nailed it!".

With Richt getting the Miami job (not officially official yet, but its being reported that it will be tomorrow), I wonder if that puts Schiano back here over Golden.

Agree that Richt going to Miami increases the chances Schiano at least entertains returning to the banks. He really seems like he wants to stay in Florida though. I don't blame him.

nj.com may be throwing darts, but the only common names across almost all media outlets today for RU have been Golden and Ash. There's just too much smoke around Al Golden for it to be pure speculation.

Not a big fan of Golden. Couldn't win at Miami, did a nice job turning around Temple, but never even won his division in the MAC. Then there's the stuff he said about Rutgers while he was at Virginia.

The SL is always throwing darts at the Rutgers program or any political agenda they don't agree with.

RE: Rutgers zero'ing in on Al Golden
If they go Golden, I kind of feel they went the opposite way as Maryland.

Maryland took someone as an assistant. Being a little more untested as a head coach, that was more of a risk which could backfire, but also left large potential upside as he has the making of someone you could see being a very good head coach.

Rutgers is going with an existing head coach who has generally done well, but never has been one to bring home a conference title. I think them rising above their current state is very likely, but also think they will be less likely to get the season that takes them to Indianapolis.

There's rumors that Rutgers is talking to Dan Mullen again. If that's true it would explain the hold up on hiring Al Golden.

Seems like Mullen is trying to interview everywhere. Wants out of Starkville. He'd be a great hire but expensive.

I feel like Maryland is in a better position to take risks than Rutgers. Maryland was losing, but the entire Rutgers football program (and AD) from top to bottom needs shoring up.

Hopefully it happens. Mullen is a damned good coach.

Would love to see Moglia or Tedford here too... it'd be nice to have a dominant offense here.

Especially over Golden. Not putting Golden down per say. He brought Temple back from the abyss and worked wonders under Miami's sanctions but I believe Mullen would be a better recruiter and GAME DAY COACH over Golden. Question is would Mullen really leave the SE for a NE school. If he can keep Miss. St making bowls he would certainly land a job at Auburn or someplace like that in the SEC when the Auburn coach gets fired next year. Heck Muschamp can see the writing on the wall at Auburn and is trying to land another job already. 07-coffee3

Read that Tedford is hanging it up in the CFL. He is available and probably out tolling for a job south of the Canadian Border already. Would be a good hire but is there really mutual interest for both parties. Have not heard anything about him for the Rutgers hire. But then again who saw the Mendenhal hire curve ball coming at Virginia. He wasn't even on the list of perspective coaches there. 07-coffee3

Mullen grew up in the northeast, played football in the northeast and his first two coaching gigs were in the northeast. The first time he moved away from the northern region was when he followed Urban Meyer from Bowling Green to Utah and then to Florida.

He's discussed the Rutgers job twice already but both times the hangup has been the salary compared to what he's getting at Miss State, and looks like both times Rutgers has not been willing to pay up (first time they would not match his $3 million salary, this time not willing to outpay Miss State which currently has him at $4.2 million).
