It is a well known fact that Harrison Ford lobbied to kill off Han Solo during the original trilogy and has been very open to the fact that he doesn't like the movies or the character for years. The fact that he came back was stunning and I'm sure only because JJ agreed to kill off the character. He's not coming back.
just got home from seeing it...and I thought it was kinda meh'
1) you start on a desert world, with a protagonist who does not know their parentage.
2) A droid holds a vital message, and ends up with protagonist
3) bad guy is controlled by a governor (snively ginger guy) and emperor (Snoke)
4) there is a death star like thing, with a major flaw, that can be exploited
5) there is a cantina scene, with music
6) a father and son fight to the death on a cat walk
7) Leia runs a coordinated attack of x-wings from a distant control center
I feel like I've seen this movie, and it was done better the first time IMHO.
better than I, II, and just as good as III, though...so it's an "above average movie"...I simply can't call it great/good because it felt too derivative.
I think Trek got the better work out of JJ, for far less money...
edit: I bet Snoke is darth Plegeise (sp?) that the emperor mentions to Anakin in epIII...I bet he made Anakin with the intention of his fathering Luke, to destroy the emperor.

Finally saw this yesterday. It was really fun, but not a great movie.
Rey's a female version of the New Kirk that Abrams wrote for the Star Trek reboot, the one who goes from cadet straight to captain because his awesomeness is just so awesome.
The guy playing Finn is an enormously better actor than the Rey actress, and that kinda threw off their scenes. Do none of the characters notice that Finn's an utter sociopath, gunning down the guys who were his friends/family a few minutes before and shouting wooohoooo all the way?
Has Carrie Fisher had some kind of stroke or something? She could barely speak her lines.
Yes there is supposed to be another movie out next year and Han is the main character. It will be more about the war and how the rebellion got the death star plans...or so I've heard. It will not be an extension of the current episode but more of a filler for the movie details. We will see.

Trek didn't make a billion dollars in 10 days. Granted any Star Wars movie with any director would have made that money in this day and age, but I don't think running costs are gonna be an issue. Fanboys complain about anything Star Wars that isn't what they know. I think revamping the original story was pretty brilliant to get them on board before it takes the direction it's headed.

I thought it wasn't the fact that he didn't like the character or movie, just that he thought Han needed to go out as a "hero" on the character's terms, and Lucas and company nixed it at the last minute that ticked him off?

I will never understand this phenomenon the last 20 years of redoing old movies, and acting like they did something amazing.
look at Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor...crappy movies can make lots of money...but this isn't a crappy movie...it's better than I,II, and even better than III by a hair...so it's above average...it just doesn't hold a candle to "A New Hope" or "the Empire Strikes Back"
I have a lot of respect for what JJ did with Trek in 2009 because of the Star Trek rights situation...after viacom broke up, trek was split between CBS and Paramount...JJ had to come up with this "alternate universe" to make the studios happy, and even get a movie done.
according to JJ, that was why he moved on to Star Wars...he was happy with the potential of doing Trek movies, and maybe even the 2017 TV series...but didn't want to deal with multiple interests pulling him different directions...at least with Star Wars he can do whatever he likes.

We have been conditioned from all of these movies that you need training. All of the sudden this girl can fly the falcon, fight like a knight, and use the force. While a decent flick, this movie was for the weak minded.

Saw the movie yesterday. I didn't like that they had what was basically a third Death Star, but otherwise enjoyed the similarities to the first three (by release). I took the title of the movie to be the explanation to why Finn broke his conditioning and why both he and Rhea could fight with a lightsaber. I think the mental attack Rylo used on Rhea (along with the Force reaching out to Rhea) gave her the basis for the Jedi Mind Trick. She was carrying around a staff for the first part of the movie, so I assumed she already had weapons experience that helped with the lightsaber fight, along with Rylo being hurt and emotionally wrecked.
The overall story of he Force has always been that there must be a balance. Vader was supposed to bring balance to the Force (the legend from Ep1), but instead wiped out all of the Jedi. Then Luke wipes out the Sith and starts training Jedi, so naturally someone is pulled to the dark. What happened to the other Jedi trainees?
I think Luke will form a new Order, that accepts both Light and Dark in moderation. The Light says you can't love or feel any strong emotions and the Dark says you must obey your emotions and put yourself #1 in all things. Neither is a useful philosophy.
I was waiting for a "they shoot a lot better than they used to" line about the stormtroopers muttered in passing by someone onscreen, but I guess that would have been too meta/fan-service.
I also think they could have made the "Poe survived" reveal a bit more suspenseful, but then again its obvious in the trailer.

You need training to master certain aspects but all have natural ability. Anakin was discovered because he was the only human that could do pod racing/had the reflexes to pod race. That was due to the force. He used the force to anticipate his surroundings.
