There are more than a few schools who dabble with D1 who honestly are close to shuttering. You have MEAC schools who are flirting with closing, accreditation issues, enrollment, mission, and other conflicts who should probably worry more about staying afloat more than sustaining D1. I see Chicago State, who is creeping toward hurt.
I'm in Philly, and we're finally seeing the saturation issues unfolding: Philly U. and Jefferson are set to merge, with USciences probably to follow. There will be others who perish, and some are in D1. Heck, part of the reason La Salle tried football some time ago was for a perceived enrollment spike that never came. They killed the sport, and enrollment is still hurting. This is a very real thing, and some of these schools need to come to some sort of grip.
Having both Morgan St. and Coppin St. in Baltimore is kind of ridiculous (not to mention Towson St. and UMBC).
UMBC is a good school. Towson is an average school that is affordable and serves the community.
The two HBCUs serve a purpose as well, but they are not as strong as the previous two.
And the two HBCUs serve a similar purpose, are both pretty small, and are only a few miles from each other. They should be merged.
I think merges would be more frequent, especially today, if there were programs or other infrastructure worth fully combining. I think the realities are that schools will more likely see just a lot of redundancies and more property. There's nothing unique enough to spur more mergers, except for medical facilities.
Like, around here...it's not like La Salle or St. Joe's can really get anything out of Peirce, Chestnut Hill, Holy Family, or Manor College. And, I suspect there's not enough there for those two to make it worth schools like PU or US's while. Odd to think PU or US might outlive LS or SJ because of Jefferson and the logic for their needs.
Some schools are not cut out for merging.

1. Bama - cause white trash is gross
2. the Liberty online degree mill
3. Memphis - becuase a high school should never be allowed to qualify as a university

1. 2. & 3. UNC-Chapel Hill
and because they made the unfortunate decision to have similar colors: Columbia, The Citadel, UCLA, Rhode Island, Kansas City Royals, and San Diego Chargers.

You people are mean. If Wisconsin or Michigan, for example, were forced close, I would be mad as heck as anybody about losing a rival. Therefore, I will not be casting any vote.

They don't use 'Carolina' in their name since they prefer just using NC State. I did, however, leave out Coastal Carolina.

And in other news, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte announced that it will change its athletic branding from "Charlotte" to "North Carolina".

None! I'd rather add N.Alabama, NW Missouri St., and Grand Valley St. from D-II

Surprised no one said Kentucky yet:
1) University of Kentucky - the school that named its arena after the coach who earned them the death penalty
2) Grand Canyon - education should not be a for-profit activity
3) California - the whole state
