Ellis Johnson had a terrific resume' as an FBS assistant, and we all know how that turned out.

There's no way of knowing what Hopson will do until he does it, but I'd imagine no small number of Alcorn fans had similar doubts as yours when they hired him. "How's a white guy going to recruit at a HBCU?" "This guy's only worked at schools with big budgets and great facilities, how's he going to survive here?" etc. They took the chance on him anyway, and he delivered beyond their highest hopes.

Fair points.

That's the word, but we shall see.

Interestingly enough two of the current coaches were assistants during Hopson's two previous stints here. Lytrell Pollard, either safeties or corners, along with Randy Butler, defense quality control, are both Bower assistants who were back on staff already under Monken. Not sure where but I'm assuming that Butler will get one of the 2 openings on the staff. He was here for 15 or so years and had several different titles under Bower including Asst HC his last 2-3 years here. He went to Troy when Fedora was hired and was there until last season when Troy's coach left. He then came back here but it was to be HC at Oak Grove High School but was let go when he couldn't get certified teachers license so Monken brought him on as quality control.

Well, Memphis just stole SMU's top qb recruit. Might have helped Howard's decision. However it happened, Hop has to lock him up now.

Indeed, they just got a kid named moore, who is apparently very similar to howard. Hard to tell if they targeted moore because howard was shaky, or if howard got shaky because they were persuing moore.

I love the hire - Coach Hopson still has a lot of friends up here, did wonderfully at Alcorn St and is going to do very well at Southern Miss & I'm glad Howard wound up in a good spot. Memphis is pretty full at the qb position now and the kid can really play.

Best I can tell probably a little bit of both. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. Either way, it's a win/win. Memphis brings in the guy the new HC has been targeting since day one and USM gets a quality replacement for their qb that flipped. The only one left standing at the alter is SMU.
