Should you ever let a winning coach walk??
On the JMU board they have a thread about if Coach Brady should come back? He is 3 years removed from a title and JMU just got their 20th win today and tied for 3rd in a very competitive CAA. Combining that with our past experience with letting a winner walk away, I think they are nuts. Thoughts??

He can't take them to the next level, so I can understand their desire to move on. You don't want to be stuck in purgatory, where you have a "pretty good" coach. You want a guy capable of leading you to the top on a consistent basis.

Problem is it's very hard to find that next Shaver, Coen or Keatts at this level. And JMU's Administration tends to mishandle things when it comes to coaches. Brady himself has had to deal with a "lame duck" year where his contract had 1 year left and no extension, which hurt his recruiting abilities. And it goes without saying that their fans wish they were in Conference USA right now, so there's that whole issue they have with the leadership on campus.

Can they be trusted to find a coach better than him? Right now he at least provides stability.

Unless there's some top quality coaches on the market I would strongly suggest they don't let him walk. He may not lead them to back to back championships, but he does consistently keep them at the top of the conference.

Any time you have a fan base calling for heads, you have to temper that with what's available. I hate bringing them up, but a good example of this is what ECU football just did.

Great point !

Consistency at the mid major level is severely underrated. Only one team gets to go the dance a year 99% of the time. Plus JMU is not a basketball school they are a football school and they are an unhappy bunch who want to be FBS. For Brady to get them to where they are now is a very good sign. Id give him another 3 years

You could say the same thing about Bruiser. Since he has been here he has been a winner (just not where it counts the most in getting to the big dance). He has won a lot of games here, despite the past couple years pulling him down.

As far as when is the right time? There is nothing concrete and it will depend on each school's situation as well as vision. For JMU, their fans vision and their actual school's vision are not the same (likewise for Drexel), and I can't see JMU moving on from Brady even if he hasnt really gotten them over the hump. JMU is interested in football and womens basketball, so I dont see them moving on from a successful coach in mens basketball unless he has a season or 2 well below average.

dan, difference is Brady has led the Dukes to an NCAA Tournament bid within the last 3 years. Granted, that was a fairly lucky run in a down year for the league, but a title is a title. And this year's Dukes squad has been probably his finest season.

I can see a big dropoff for them after Curry is gone, however, with a couple fairly disappointing recruiting classes occurring the years after Curry ascended (not to mention how awful they looked when he was hurt for a few games). He'll need to coach well above his weight class the next couple of years to convince Dukes fans he's the guy.

I was not actually trying to compare Bruiser and Brady outside of the fact both have won a lot of games. Yes Brady has a CAA title, something our coach does not, but my point is their fans view of their coach and their school's view are vastly different. They actually believe they should be a power team where JMU athletics clearly thinks they belong right where they are as a mid major. I doubt any of their fans will change their minds. He has been there long enough that they either like him or dont, but I doubt many would ever change that stance since he has been there long enough to form a true opinion.
