Not at all, but you know that. Folks are allowed to protest, and other folks are allowed to call them idiots. Works both ways.

An aspect of 21st century freedom of speech in a nutshell.

By the way, be interesting to see if Wendys goes belly up now that it's done something no conservative thinks will work, i.e., pay workers a good wage.

they aren't raising anything...they're installing kiosks...the OP was trying to equate the MW to these kiosks.

they have been coming for over a decade ever since supermarkets got the 'u-scan' lanes...it was inevitable as technology only gets cheaper

Totally clueless.

it's a simple fact that 'u-scan' type technology is cheaper today than 10 years ago...but you go right on spewing your BS because you simply wish to attack anything I say.

It hasn't doubled in the last 5 years, has it?
Besides you're talking about professionals, not min wage workers. Entirely different.
You're missing the forest for the trees but you ARE precisely making my point on the difference between THIS rise in the Min Wage and any other previous one.

Most importantly, what you describe is a function of supply/demand. If you've been somewhere for 20 years and aren't making more than an entry level person in the same job, you either lack transportable skills or you should test the employment waters. You're not suggesting that the government mandate that someone with 20 years be ASSURED of making 150% of a 'new hire'? There will be LOTS of unemployed 45 year olds.

I worked in a factory right out of high school for 11 years. At least twice I remember the minimum wage going up from 3.25 to 3.55 to 3.85. each time, new employees got what I was already making and I was already there for year and a half.

Once again, you only continue to prove my point.
1) you said 20 years, now you're talking about 18 months. unfathomable difference once again
2) if after 18 months you were still earning minimum wage, then you either lacked transportable skills or you should have tested the employment waters. Businesses aren't responsible for promoting you 'just because'. If you're a pizza delivery driver, the skills for that don't require much experience nor does experience add much value to the position. If you're a pizza delivery driver for 20 years, you're going to be making the same money as the guy who just started. If you're an assembly line worker, one could argue that experience leads to fewer mistakes and higher efficiency and is thus worth more... OR, an IT guy with a brand new certification on the latest equipment might be worth as much or even more than a guy who graduated 20 years ago and has been working on old technology (your 'professional' example). One of my degrees is in computer science from one of the best schools in the country... but a guy fresh out of ITT knows more about networking etc than I do by far. If that is the key skill the job we are going after requires, he's a better fit.

Good point. Just another example of how businesses/investors will always find a way to 'win' no matter how hard leftists try and 'make the corporations/wealthy pay'. halting the presumptive and ignorant reaction to that by many... it doesn't mean you can't make them pay... it just means you have to consider how they will always try and make money, and focus on collecting a larger portion of it... rather than trying to stop them from making money. What is often referred to as growing the pie rather than trying to take a larger slice of a smaller pie. One of the reasons comparisons to other countries of the 'tax bite' is so meaningless.

With all due respect, when you respond to people with comments like this:

(05-19-2016 09:57 AM)UofMemphis Wrote:  So in your world people never get days off, and the poor shouldn't be allowed to protest...typical conservative attitude.

You're asking for it.

It is a common meme that technology IS replacing people so raising the min wage isn't changing anything... and that is true when the min wage is rising at about the 'efficiency' level... but when you arbitrarily decide that despite relatively high REAL unemployment, we're going to double it in just a short period of time, you MAKE lots of technology that might have been years from being financially practical, suddenly financially practical. ESPECIALLY when you add the cost of other government enforced benefits like healthcare.

There will be HUGE growth in 'technology' companies to develop and build these sorts of machines going forward... anything that replaces labor... far outpacing the past growth. Seems to me that a SMART government would tie such a massive min wage increase to incentives to make sure that that tech is developed HERE. Have you seen any of that? I haven't. All I've seen is a focus on the wealth gap.... ignoring that the working class and the poor can only really be 'here', but the wealthy and their money can literally be anywhere.

Seriously think about it. We're going to reduce employment by raising wages. We're going to encourage growth, but are unlikely to capture 'more than our share' of it. And we're proposing to penalize the wealthy, which only reduces the share we are likely to capture.

We have morons at the wheel.

Evidently you do because you made the effort to reply.

And the purpose of discussion forums is to discuss things. Some people have relevant life experiences that provide insight so they share. I'm sure that one day you'll finally be able to provide some insightful life experience when we get around to discussing the pros and cons of paper or plastic grocery bags.

Ah, kiosks. Or else Wendys won't be able to give its CEO another $7 million in compensation next year like they did in 2014.

Wendy's employs 21,500 people (give or take). If their CEO worked *for free* that would be an extra 330$ per year per employee. Even if you decided to give that money *only* to the hourly fast food workers and not the managers, it folks, and other professionals. that would be 21 cents an hour!

But yea the politics of envy is not at play here..

Here's a clue; one should strive in their occupation to elevate oneself. In other words, if you are 30 years old and still flipping burgers, dont get mad because someone invested time, effort, and sacrifice of their life to better themselves to earn a better wage.

You'll need to cut out a lot of texting, blogging, and playing x-box. Not sure if some of you are up to it. So get used to it. Some of us will make more than you do.

ASSumptions, as in getting butthurt a CEO makes a few million per year? You dont get those kind of earnings in a safe space, skippy.

Stop bitching about what others have EARNED, and focus on improving yourself.

Momentum Machines unveiled its autonomous grill master in 2012 and recently announced it will be opening a robot-powered burger bar in San Francisco’s South of Market.
Although this machine can do the work of three humans, the startup is still hiring people to perform other tasks such as payroll and taking out the garbage.
