$6 million to upgrade streaming
I posted in another thread that WS said today on Cattles that the 4 main players (Bein, ASN, CBS and ESPN, I believe) have agreed to kick in 6 mil for the schools to use in upgrading their broadcast facilities.
Trying to spin the contract as positively as possible, I think this could turn out to be a great deal. IF streaming is the way of the future, C-USA could be getting a nice little subsidy here to take the lead in conference streaming. Optimistically speaking, we could be setting up for a nice run down the road in streaming capability.

Tradition is dead. No risk no reward so we may in fact get a leg up on the new streaming era. Glass half full and all. :)

I'll be ok with that because quite honestly I'm only paying for fios at this point out of habit it feels. We spend most of our time watching online services.

It is only a two year contract(s) so if CUSA can get their streaming act together in that time it could provide some strong negotiating leverage for the next contract.

That's what I'm curious about. Why are the TV partners ponying up money for the schools specifically to improve their broadcast facilities if, in all likelihood, at least one of them won't be on the next contract? Seems kind of risky to invest in schools with whom you may not be affiliated for long.

I think thats the reason why schools are receiving less money for the next two years. Regarding the broadcasters and the equipment added to school, I think its more of a universal equipment used by all broadcasters and permanent upgrade where schools will be the property holder. If a school leaves after a year, probably they will need to pay for half the cost.
Anyway here is what I posted in the main CUSA board and I hope CUSA does this if ODU is staying here for a long time.
Quote:Instead of paying individual schools $7 to $15 per month to watch a game online, why not charge the same amount to watch all CUSA team games. Imagine $7 per month with 60,000 subscribers with every CUSA game to watch, that would be $84 per year individually and 5 mil per year as a whole. Better package than the current TV deal but not in regards to publicity. Still better money. Slowly CUSA can open up their own TV channel and let people subscribe through TV which would also be available online and in apps. Generate money through ads and keep replaying the pre-recorded recent games. Live games can be streamed from online to TV in HD and we dont need those TV trucks, I wouldn't care if its 5 minutes delay. DO IT, JUST DO IT! and please don't broadcast Radio commentary over streams (when on TV), it **will sound stupid and annoying.

There just aren't enough people in the world that can do, at least, a mediocre job of announcing all of the football games on a given Saturday.

Conference USA already has a streaming network. It's part of the CBS College Sports Live network. The problem is many games are not streamed. But that is partly due to rights for the TV games. Starting their own TV network seems like a huge step up that might not be worth the effort.

That only covers schools that have CBS as a multimedia partner. No ODU home games are part of that package since we're with Neulion.
